About the Project:

We’re improving footpath safety on Parkhurst Road in Parakai to provide safe, convenient and well-connected walking options in your community.

This is part of our Walking Programme which commits to encouraging safe walking in your neighbourhood.

The changes we’re making by September - October 2025

  • Installing new footpaths and kerbs on the western side of Parkhurst Road, extending the footpath by 350 meters between the driveways of 199 and 241 Parkhurst Road.
  • Reconstructing driveways that will be impacted by the new footpath. Any work that alters a driveway shall be at our cost.
  • Improvements to the existing crossing island outside #199 Parkhurst Road including:
    1. Widening the pram crossings on both sides. This helps people crossing to safely wait for a gap in traffic (while giving way to motorists) to finish crossing the road.
    2. Installing tactile pavers, which are yellow guidance paving markers, to help the visually impaired cross safely.
  • Clearing vegetation and removing and relocating some trees to clear access for people using the footpath
  • Install new streetlights for improved safety at night for people on foot.

A full design drawing is available to the right of this page, titled "Parkhurst Road Footpath Design", which shows the design locations on a map.

Benefits to your community:

  • Footpaths make it safer for the community by separating motorists and traffic from people on foot. Widening the footpath gives more room for people to wait to cross
  • Pram crossings, make it safer and more convenient for people pushing prams or strollers and ensures those with mobility needs can navigate crossings more easily
  • Well-maintained footpaths are safer for people who walk and ride their bikes and scooters, reducing the risk of being hurt or injured.
  • More footpaths make it easier and stress-free for the community to move around the neighbourhood, offering better connections to schools, parks, public transport and other local amenities.
  • Walking and cycling is good for the environment and good for your health. It helps reduce reliance on cars for local trips, decreasing traffic congestion and reducing our carbon emissions.

If you’d like to speak to someone about our plans, please get in touch by emailing us at ATEngagement@at.govt.nz (External link) by 15 June 2025.
