Safety improvements at the Kawana Street and Lake Road intersection

Minor safety changes are planned at the Lake Road and Kawana Street intersection in Northcote to make it safer for drivers who travel through this area.

What we are doing

The proposed improvements include:

• Install new road surfacing to improve braking.
• Install a new driver feedback sign.
• Install new “SLOW” road marking on red surfacing to encourage lower speeds.
• Install an advance warning sign to alert drivers to the intersection ahead.

Why we are doing this

Between 2021 and 2025, six crashes were reported near the intersection, including five rear-end crashes involving vehicles waiting to turn right into Kawana Street. These changes will help improve safety for everyone using this part of the road network. These changes are planned for early 2027.

Community engagement is open for four weeks, from 28 September to 26 October 2026.
