Overview
We’re working hard to keep everyone safe, whether they walk, cycle or drive. Alongside the Εtara-Papatoetoe Local Board, we are planning safety improvements to the intersection of Kolmar Road, Weston Avenue and Oakland Avenue.
We’ve heard from the community highlighting a need for a pedestrian crossing on Kolmar Road to improve access to nearby recreational amenities and a school. This is important given the presence of children, families, and pedestrians who regularly use this route.
The changes we’re planning to:
- Install a pedestrian island in the middle of Kolmar Road, to the south of the intersection with Oakland Avenue, with tactile pavers to provide a safe stopping place to wait for a gap in traffic.
- Widen the existing kerb ramps on Kolmar Road either side of the new crossing to provide more space to wait safely before crossing and make it easier for pram or mobility users to cross.
- Install yellow tactile pavers at the crossing points and adjust the existing kerb ramps, footpath, and grass berm on Kolmar Road and Oakland Avenue. This will help visually impaired people find their way to crossing points.
- Change the intersection at Oakland Avenue and Kolmar Road from a give-way to a stop control to help drivers make safer decisions when navigating the intersection.
- Add no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) in the following areas:
- All corners of the Kolmar Road and Oakland Avenue intersection
- Between the driveways of 100 and 102 Kolmar Road
- A small section outside 93 Kolmar Road
- Install new signage and paint new road markings to support the proposed changes.
This project is supported by the Εtara-Papatoetoe Local Board and is delivered by Auckland Transport on their behalf funded through the Local Board Transport Capital Fund.
Community benefits and impacts
- Improve pedestrian safety by providing a safer crossing point for all road users, especially for people going to nearby recreational facilities and a school.
- Encourage drivers to slow down.
- Painting additional broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times) where appropriate to provide improved visibility between pedestrians and cars as well as formalising no parking within 6 metres of the intersection as per New Zealand regulations.
- Upgrading kerb ramps to help people with strollers or mobility needs cross more comfortably.
These changes would remove 4 on-street parking spaces on Kolmar Road, 3 on Oakland Avenue and 4 on Weston Avenue to provide clear visibility between drivers and pedestrians. We acknowledge this can be inconvenient, so we have minimised the removal of parking as much as possible.
