About the project

We’ll be improving crossing safety near 82 St Georges Road, Avondale.

Thanks to the Whau Local Board Capital Transport fund, the new crossing and streetlight improvements will prioritise people crossing especially our tamariki and the local community.

The changes we're making by July 2025

  • Upgrade the crossing island to a raised zebra crossing including new stormwater drainage, near 82 St Georges Road, Avondale. Raising the crossing so its level with the footpath slows drivers on approach, ensures people crossing can be seen by motorists
  • Reallocating 8 parking spaces – we need to clear access near the new crossing and improve visibility for motorists to see people crossing as well as space for the footpath extensions. This is 2 outside No 73, 3 outside No 76 and 3 outside No 88 to 84
  • Upgrade the foothpaths on either side of the crossing including more room to wait to cross.
  • Install tactile pavers which are yellow guidance paving markers to help vision impaired people cross the road.
  • Upgrading existing streetlights to support the new zebra crossing
  • Painting new road markings and installing signs so motorists know to slow on approach and to give priority to people crossing the road here.
  • Removal of trees and replacing them elsewhere. To clear visibility near the crossing.

A drawing on the next page shows where we will be installing these safety improvements

Benefits to your community

  • Safer Crossings - Clearer zebra crossings and better lighting make it easier for drivers to see people crossing.
  • Better Accessibility – Upgraded pram crossings and tactile pavers help people with mobility needs, parents with strollers, and those with vision impairments.
  • Improved Traffic Flow – Widened footpaths, ramps for prams or mobility scooters, and other upgrades will make it easier for families and others to get around.
  • Enhanced Visibility – Upgraded streetlights will improve visibility at night and in low-light conditions.
  • More travel choices - Get around Avondale by walking, cycling or scooter, that is good for you, your whanāu and the environment.
  • Better for you - Improves your health and well-being to enjoy the outdoors in your neighbourhood safely.

What happens next

  • We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place.
  • Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
