About the project
Improving road safety on Sabulite Road and St Leonards Road Intersection
As part of AT’s road safety programme, we will be installing high friction surfacing, widening the flush median and updating signage on the Sabulite Road - St Leonards Road intersection.
The intersection of Sabulite Road - St Leonards Road currently only has a give-way sign and is located on a sharp curve, which makes it dangerous and high-risk for crashes. This project will improve safety for all road users.
The changes we’re making
Install new High Friction Surfacing on both roads to improve safety at the bend
Install new wider flush median road marking lines near the intersection
Install additional curve warning signs near the bend
A drawing showing the sites of changes is included in this letter on the last page.
Benefits to your community
High friction surfacing helps vehicles from skidding and sliding, which reduces accidents, especially in wet conditions on curves and intersections.
Curve warning signs alert drivers to slow down for the curves ahead.
Help drivers stay alert and aware, especially at night or in poor weather.
Protect all road users — drivers, passengers, cyclists, and people on foot.
What happens next
We will be in touch with local residents before any work takes place.
Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
How to contact us
If you’d like to speak to someone about our plans, please get in touch by emailing us atATEngagement@at.govt.nz or leave us a message in the comments below by 12 October 2025.
