As part our road safety programme, we will be making Whangaripo Valley Road between 1005 Whangaripo Valley Road and the Wayby Valley Road safer for all vehicles travelling through the area. This area has been identified as a high-risk crash area, including loss of control and head-on collisions from crossing the centre line. The project aims to improve safety for all road users of this section of road.
The changes we are making in mid-2026:
Apply new road markings on Whangaripo Valley Road between 1005 Whangaripo Valley Road and the Wayby Valley Road at various approaches to guide drivers to stay in their lane as they enter the curves on this section of road.
Install new curve advisory and advisory speed signs between 1005 Whangaripo Valley Road and the Wayby Valley Road. These signs warn drivers that they are coming up to a tight curve or bend in the road and recommends a safe and comfortable speed to drive around the curve.
Install a STOP SIGN at the entrance of the Tomarata Valley Road intersection ensuring traffic on Tomarata Valley Road give way to traffic on Whangaripo Valley Road.
Install new one lane bridge message marking near 466 Whangaripo Valley Road to assist traffic going over the one-way bridge safely.
Install new white centreline RRPMs (Red Reflective Raised Pavement markers) on Whangaripo Valley Road between 1005 Whangaripo Road and the Wayby Valley Road intersection to mark the centre of the road between opposite lanes of traffic.
A drawing showing the changes can be found to the right of this page.
