Consultation Outcome

After reviewing the feedback we received, we are proceeding without changes on our proposal to implement new P60 time restrictions for the 8 parking spaces starting from outside 1-5 Riddell, Sweetie Pie bakery to Get Sushi.

What happens next

We anticipate these changes will be installed between January and March 2025.

We'll be in touch with local residents before any changes take place.

Community Feedback

Thank you for helping us make better decisions for your neighbourhood, informed by your local knowledge.

We received 6 submissions on our online survey and 3 emails. 7 supported with suggestions and 2 selected the changes would not benefit the community.

Some of the positive comments are below:

  • Customers for local businesses can find carparks and support local businesses.
  • Local businesses stay in business great for the community.
  • That sounds like a good plan, I hope this plan gets implemented quickly.

Below is a summary of your feedback and our responses.

Parking

  • Concern about the loss of parking spaces for residents and businesses. Residents should not be disadvantaged when there is already a nearby parking solution. The government and Auckland Council have allowed significant housing development on Riddell Road, increasing from 2 to over 13 houses, without clear parking provisions. Once the new development is complete, there will be no free spaces left for residents or customers.

On-street parking is a public asset, and AT prioritises for on-street parking in this instance is supporting the needs to local businesses.

Residents and businesses should not rely on on-street parking for their needs as land and road use may change.

AT cannot comment on the parking provision of new developments as this sits outside its area of responsibility.

  • Request to keep the existing parking given the available space in the proposed area.

Local businesses have requested a change in the current restrictions. After site visits and discussions with them, we’re proposing a reasonable proposal that accommodates their needs while also ensuring there is enough unrestricted parking spaces for the wider community.

Duration of Parking Restrictions

  • Concern that the proposed P60 restriction is not long enough for clients spending up to 2.5 hours in the hair salon. It is not ideal for them to be interrupted to re-park after one hour with color on their hair.

There will still be multiple unrestricted spaces for customers who need to stay longer. The 8 P60 spots are designed to serve most of the businesses here.

Owners and staff could consider avoiding parking in these restricted spaces to allow their patrons to find a parking space easily.

Reserved parking Space

  • Suggestion for two reserved parking spaces for each bushiness and to keep the rest of the parking spaces unchanged.

On-street parking space is a public asset and should be available for everyone to use, following any rules set by the road authority. For this reason, AT can’t reserve on-street parking space for the exclusive use of an individual or business.

P30 Restriction

  • Request a P30 restriction for half of the spaces if possible due to the businesses being takeaways.

Finding a time restriction that suits everyone can be challenging because local businesses have different needs. In this case AT believes that the mix of 60 minute and unrestricted parking better meets the wider needs of customers. In addition, having a single time restriction is easier to understand.

Parking Wardens

  • Request parking wardens between 1pm and 6pm from Wednesday to Saturday, with the P60 restriction signage in the area. This would be more effective.

Due to the limited parking enforcement resource that AT has, it is not possible for AT to  commit to specific periods of enforcement. Riddell Road would be included in our regular monitoring patrols.

No Parking Lines

  • Request adding no parking lines across from the parking spaces on Riddell Road. Cars parking there reduce traffic flow to one lane, slowing progress through the junction to St Heliers Bay Road.

Thank you for the feedback, unfortunately, this request is out of this project scope as this affects the traffic flow, but we will refer it to the appropriate team for investigation.

About the project

Auckland Transport have received feedback from nearby businesses to provide some time restricted parking spaces at the parking lot outside 2 Riddell Road. At present, there are no parking restrictions in place, and drivers park for extended periods in this area, when availability is important for businesses and customers alike. As a result, we are proposing changes.

What we are proposing

We’re improving parking availability on your street.

  • Implementing new P60 time restrictions for the first eight parking spaces starting from outside Sweetie Pie bakery to Get Sushi.

The restriction will apply from Monday to Saturday, 6am to 6pm. This will improve parking turnover and meet the needs of the businesses.

Benefits and impacts

Implementing new P60 time restrictions in unrestricted areas will improve parking availability for people needing short-stay parking to support customers and the businesses.

What we want your feedback on

We are seeking feedback from nearby residents and businesses on the parking duration we have proposed.
