About the project

We're making changes at the intersection of Richardson Road and Maioro Street to improve safety for everyone travelling through New Windsor.

The community has raised concerns about pedestrian safety at this busy intersection, particularly due to drivers making U‑turns that put people crossing the road at risk. The intersection is used daily by many parents and their tamariki travelling to and from Christ the King School.

To make it safer for people crossing the road, we’re planning to add new road signs near the Richardson Road and Maioro Street intersection. These changes will help improve safety and will prevent drivers from turning right out of the intersection.

What we're planning in July 2026:

  • Install flexible safety posts (flexi‑hit sticks) on the northern approach of Richardson Road. The safety post will extend from the median island along the centre flush median, extending approximately 50 metres.
  • Install a No U-turn sign at 277 Richardson Road to discourage U‑turn movements that pose a safety risk to pedestrians.

Benefits to your community:

  • Improves safety for school students and pedestrians especially during busy drop‑off and pick‑up times.
  • Creates a safer, more connected neighbourhood, making it easier for people to walk to schools, parks, public transport, and other local destinations.
  • Encourages drivers slow down and take extra care when approaching the crossing and improves visibility between motorists and people crossing the road.

What happens next?

  • We will be in touch with residents before any work takes place.
  • Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
