Redcrest Ave Crossing
Engagement Completed
Thank you for helping us make better decisions for your neighbourhood, informed by your local knowledge. The engagement for this project has finished.
Public consultation was held between 9 and 23 March 2026.
276 residents and property owners in the area received an inform letter on 9 March 2026, and a project webpage was live throughout the consultation period at https://haveyoursay.at.govt.nz/Redcrest-Ave-Crossing.
Overall, the feedback we received showed support for the changes.
Community Feedback
People told us:
The community supported improvements to pedestrian safety outside Redhill Primary School, particularly the relocation of the crossing to a safer position away from the bend.
Residents and the school community were supportive of measures to slow traffic and improve visibility at the crossing.
People also shared concerns regarding the proposal, including:
The school raised concerns about vehicles parking and driving on the berm and footpath near the school driveway and requested physical barriers such as bollards or a traffic island extension.
AT responded that bollards on footpaths are not appropriate for this location as they may create hazards for vision-impaired pedestrians. Parking or stopping on the footpath and/or broken yellow lines is illegal, and drivers should be aware of this under the NZ Road Code. Both should be referred to NZ Police. Illegal parking can also be reported to AT on (09) 355 3553.
Engagement Outcome
We want to thank the community in the project area for their feedback. After carefully reviewing the feedback we received, we are proceeding with the project as proposed.
We expect to have these changes implemented by June 2026.
We’ll be in touch with residents in the affected work areas before construction begins.
About the project
Redcrest Avenue - New Pedestrian Crossing
We are planning to relocate and upgrade the existing pedestrian crossing on Redcrest Avenue, moving it from its current position on the right side of the Redhill Primary School entrance to a new location on the left side of the entrance.
The school has raised concerns about vehicle speeds near the bends, the limited coverage of the current stay-put signs, and recurring flooding issues at the crossing. The proposed changes aim to address these issues and create a safer environment for everyone travelling through the area.
What we’re planning to do before June 2026
Relocate the existing school-patrolled zebra crossing further west on Redcrest Avenue to a safer location.
Install a school crossing patrol system for operation at peak times before and after school
Install side islands at the crossing to narrow down lane widths and slow down drivers approaching the crossing
Install tactile pavers (yellow guidance markers) at the crossing to assist vision-impaired pedestrians
Install new no parking lines at the new crossing (also known as broken yellow lines) to keep parked vehicles away from the crossing to maintain sufficient visibility between crossing pedestrians and approaching drivers
Remove some existing no parking lines at the removed crossing to create parking. The installation and removal of no parking lines as part of this improvement will not change the overall available on-street parking
Relocate the existing westbound bus stop slightly further west accordingly to accommodate the new crossing
Install new edgeline on Redcrest Avenue to help with speed calming and mitigate loss-of-control crashes.

How this upgrade will benefit the community
Provide a safe crossing for school children and the wider community.
Help slow down drivers and improve visibility of people crossing the road
