Engagement Outcome

The engagement for this project has finished. We are proceeding with the changes as planned.

About the project

We are improving crossing safety on Rānui Station Road and Robertson Road, near Rānui Primary School.

This is to address concerns raised by the school about the lack of safer crossing facilities that better protect their students, reduce vehicle speeds, and allow drivers more time to see people, especially children who cross the road during busy hours before and after school.

Growing communities mean busier roads- so we need to improve crossing facilities and make travelling locally safer for everyone!

The changes we're making

  • Upgrade the existing crossing island outside the school with a zebra crossing to slow drivers on approach and prioritise people crossing
  • Install school patrol poles, put up new signs and road markings so drivers know they’re near a school and need to slow down for people crossing the road
  • Install belisha beacon signs by the crossing outside the school. These are orange discs which warn motorists they are approaching a crossing, especially at night.
  • Install tactile pavers which are yellow guidance markers at the crossing points to help vision impaired people cross the road safely
  • Install speed humps outside #13 and #19 Rānui Station Road to slow vehicles approaching the crossing to safer speeds
  • Reconstruct existing crossing island and re-build the footpath on both sides of the crossing island in Robertson Road to provide more room and a safe area to wait before crossing the road
  • Re-allocate road space by removing 7 parking spaces along Rānui Station Road and Robertson Road to clear access and maintain visibility around the crossing

Benefits to your community

  • Makes it safer and easier for children, their parents and caregivers, people with different accessibility needs to cross safely
  • Improves your health and wellbeing to enjoy the outdoors. It offers better access to nearby, parks, schools, public transport and other local amenities.
  • Shows a commitment to the safety of the entire school community and nearby residents
  • Gives families more confidence to let their children walk, scoot or bike to school, fostering their independence. Getting around on foot doesn’t cost you or the environment a thing!
  • Protects students walking to and from school by slowing down traffic and making drivers more aware that they need to slow down near schools

What happens next

We are looking at installing these changes by December 2025 or January 2026.

Any change to the plan will be updated on this page.

We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place.
