About the project
Pedestrian Safety Improvements along Queen Street, Waiuku
We are working to make it easier and safer for you to cross the road in the Waiuku town centre. These upgrades are designed to improve safety for everyone using Queen Street and Kitchener Road, whether you live, work, or visit the area.
Currently, there aren’t enough safe places for people to cross on Queen Street between Kitchener Road and Victoria Avenue, which has been a safety concern for the community. In the past, two people were injured while crossing Kitchener Road. The current road layout isn’t easy for people to move around, which means accidents are more likely. By making these improvements, we’ll create a safer, more accessible, and better-connected space for everyone who lives, works, or visits Waiuku town centre.
What we’re planning to do before June 2027
We are proposing the following safety upgrades along Queen Street, Waiuku:
A new zebra crossing with directional and warning tactile pavers outside No. 53 Queen Street to make crossing safer.
Shorten the crossing distance at the Kitchener Road and Queen Street Intersection by building out the kerbs. New pram crossings with directional and warning tactile pavers will be added across Kitchener Road.
Add high-friction surfacing for the westbound approach to the existing zebra crossing outside No. 3 Kitchener Road, making it more visible to drivers.
Remark and install new broken yellow lines (No Stopping At All Times) and reconstruct footpath where needed.
As a result, there will be a net loss of 1 parking spaceon Queen Street, this includes the following changes:
Remove 3 parking spaces outside 53 Queen Street
Add 1 parking space outside 48 Queen Street
Add 1 parking space on Kitchener Road
You can view the proposed layout in the attached plans.
How this will benefit your neighbourhood
These improvements will make it safer and more convenient for everyone crossing the road in the Waiuku Town centre.
Safer crossing facilities for the people in the community
Safer speeds at the Queen Street and Kitchener Road intersection.
A clearer and safer road layout for the community.
What happens next
Thank you of your support.
The survey has now been closed, and we are reviewing the feedback.

Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
