Feedback summary on Quadrant Road and Arthur Street changes:
Half of respondents told us the changes would benefit the community, and half of respondents expressed concerns to us about the intersection upgrade.
People told us that the main benefit would be improved safety for pedestrians, but many were concerned that money would be better spent at other, more dangerous intersections, particularly Arthur and Selwyn Street intersection.
Feedback summary on Quadrant Road and Park Gardens changes:
Respondents were more supportive of the changes at the Quadrant Road and Park Gardens intersection. Those in support said the changes would improve safety for people walking through, especially for children, accessing the park and pool nearby. About the project
We have received requests from the community to improve pedestrian crossing facilities at the intersection of Quadrant Road and Park Gardens, to help create a safer road environment for people accessing Jellicoe Park and The Y Onehunga War Memorial Pool and those crossing the busy intersection of Arthur Street and Quadrant Road.
Currently, there is no pedestrian crossing on Quadrant Road to access Jellicoe Park.
What we are proposing
Arthur Street and Quadrant Road intersection:
We are proposing to install a raised table near the intersection of Quadrant Road and Arthur Street.
This will help vehicles slow down and allow better speed control both at the busy intersection and when turning in and out of Quadrant Road to Arthur Street and vice versa.
The changes in the proposal include:
- A raised table which is a flat and wide speed bump installed at 72 Arthur Street.
- Pram crossings installed on all road crossing points.
- Installing new tactile pavers on traffic islands at the intersection which are yellow guidance paving markers to help visually impaired people find their way to the crossing and safely across roads.
- Reshaping grass berms at the crossing points.
- The kerb extension installed at the corners of the intersection to reduce the crossing distance.
- New road markings and signage to support the changes.
- Removing seven parking spaces on Arthur Street and six parking spaces on Quadrant Road to allow for visibility.
Quadrant Road and Park Gardens intersection
We are proposing to install a raised pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Quadrant and Park Gardens Lane.
Currently, there is no pedestrian crossing on Quadrant Road to access Jellicoe Park.
To support the improvements, we will also:
- Extend the kerb on both sides to reduce the crossing distance
- Build a new concrete footpath to provide a designated walkway for pedestrians
- Install streetlights to improve visibility at the crossing
- Draw standard line marking and other advance warning signs to help drivers identify the crossing
- Remove two parking spaces on Park Gardens Lane

Benefits of the proposed changes are:
- Raised crossings and speed tables act as traffic calming measures and help reduce driver speeds.
- Alerts drivers to slow down on approach allowing better speed control.
- Providing a clearly defined crossing point for people accessing Jellicoe Park from Park Gardens Lane.
- Easier road crossing as the crossing surface is level with the footpath.
- Improving visibility and ensures pedestrians can be seen by motorists.
