About the Project
In 2024, we consulted with the community on proposed intersection upgrades to the Pupuke Road, Ocean View Road and Raleigh Road intersection. More information and the outcome from the consultation can be found here
We now want to give the community a heads up that we'll be starting construction soon!
We’ll work in three stages between May and July 2025 for up to 6 weeks (weather dependant)
We’ve listened to your feedback and responded with some design changes.
Thanks to the Kaipātiki Local Board Capital Transport Fund, new intersection upgrades are on the way to keep people moving and make it safer for everyone!

Testing everything to make sure it works well
Duration
Up to 6 weeks (weather dependent) - in several stages highlighted below
Why
More traffic, more delays: Over 1,500 vehicles use this intersection during peak hours—and that number’s set to rise by up to 26% in the next 5 years
Safety issues: It’s tough to turn safely, especially during busy times. Fast-moving traffic makes it risky for drivers, buses, and heavy vehicles.
Future growth: New housing will bring even more cars, making current problems worse if we don’t act now.
How travel is affected:
The left-turn lane from Pupuke Rd to Ocean View Rd will be closed for up to 2 weeks
Follow the detour via Raleigh Rd and Lake Rd
Some lanes will be narrower, with reduced speed limits
Short-term lane closures (up to 24 hours) on Pupuke Rd, Ocean View Rd, and Raleigh Rd for underground power work by Vector
How to get around:
See detour map on this webpage titled "Detour via Raleigh Rd and Lake Rd.pdf"
The work we’ll be doing and traffic management & detours
We’ll be doing work in stages for approximately 6 weeks. Below are the construction stages, and please refer to the attached TMP PDF on this webpage for more information.
Week 1 and 2 – Day Shift 10 am - 7 pm, and Night Shift 7 pm - 6 am (work completed outside of morning peak traffic). Nightshift work would be kept to minimum, road marking and nearby trenching works.
Detour route applies on this stage, attached to the images and documents on this page.
Week 3 - 5 – Stages 2 and 3 (Day 10 am - 7 pm, Night shift 7 pm - 6 am).
Week 5 – Stage 4 (Day shift 10 am – 7 am). A partial closure over a 24 period, to allow undergrounding power pole works at the intersection.
We’ll try to start the work on time but factors outside our control, such as weather could mean a delayed timeline. If the delay is significant, we’ll notify you and update this webpage regularly.
Take care while driving, walking, or cycling in the area. Follow all traffic signs, signals, and directions for safety.
Driveway and vehicle access to your property could be restricted, while work takes place outside your property. We will personally liaise with effected residents to minimise any disruption.
Some footpaths will be inaccessible while the works take place. Traffic controllers will be on site to assist during these closures.
On-street parking near the intersection will be limited. If your driveway is restricted, you will need to park nearby and walk home.
Some bus services could be affected – please plan ahead on the AT mobile app, follow detours and expect delays. More information is available on the affected bus stops through QR codes on bus stop closure posters.
Council waste and recycling collection will continue as normal. If access to your bin collection spot is restricted, our team will assist you with an alternative location.
Construction will run between Day and Night shifts to finish as quickly as possible. We know our work can be a bit loud, and that noise – particularly at night – can be disruptive. We’ll try to keep noise levels down.

What's in it for you?
Shorter waits – delays cut to 16–40 seconds at peak times
Easier trips to local shops and amenities
Safer journeys across Auckland and home to your whānau
Smoother traffic flow in and out of Northcote
A safer, more walkable neighbourhood for all
Benefits to the Community
Improved Traffic Flow: The upgrades will help manage the increased traffic volume, reducing delays and congestion, especially during peak traffic periods.
Enhanced Safety: The project will address safety concerns by making it easier for drivers, buses, and heavy vehicles to find safe gaps in traffic, reducing the risk of accidents.
Future-Proofing: By accommodating the expected growth in vehicle numbers due to nearby planned housing developments, the intersection will be better prepared for future demands.
Reliable Bus Services: The intersection improvements will ensure that bus services remain reliable and efficient, benefiting public transport users.
Community-Driven: The project reflects on the feedback and priorities of local residents, ensuring that the upgrades meet the community's needs.
Optimal Use of Funding: The plan makes the best use of the available Local Board Transport Capital Fund, ensuring that the investment delivers maximum benefits.
Where we’ll be working
Before the work starts, a work notice letter will be delivered to affected residents to inform the community about the disruption, lane closures and detours on surrounding roads.
We appreciate your patience during this work. Please follow detour signs when installed at the site.
