Porchester Road and Riverton Drive, Randwick Park - Raised Safety Platform
Consultation Outcome
After reviewing the feedback we received, we are proceeding with no changes on our proposal to build a raised zebra crossing on Porchester Road and Riverton Drive, Randwick Park.
What happens next
We anticipate these changes will be installed by June 2025.
We'll be in touch with local residents before any changes take place.
Community Feedback
Thank you for helping us make better decisions for your neighbourhood, informed by your local knowledge.
With the feedback we received, and support from local schools the majority of responses agreed on the proposal to build a raised zebra crossing would benefit the community.
“More accessible crossings and encouraging safer vehicle speeds and the corner built out will help this as well.”
“Speeding and careless driving is a major concern to our neighbourhood - and proposed changes would benefit the community purely from a safety point of view. I recently attended a community meeting where this subject was discussed, and the severity of the problem was certainly highlighted.”
“Help slow drivers to make it easier for me to walk.”
Below is a summary of your feedback and our responses.
Broken Yellow Lines
- I would ask that the no-stopping lines be extended slightly longer up to the first cul-de-sac coming into Riverton Drive from Porchester Road. My neighbours and I have witnessed many near-misses as we try to exit the cul-de-sac with cars parked on both sides of the road limiting visibility, Vehicles speed into Riverton Drive from Porchester Road and I know that your proposal aims to limit this speed but just a few more no-stopping lines would certainly make the exit from the cul-de-sac a whole lot safer for all concerned. We appreciate your efforts, but I cannot stress enough that this proposal must be a priority.
We understand your feedback is about the private driveway for 117, 119, 121, 123, and 125 Riverton Road. Auckland Transport aims to balance public parking with safety. While we recognize your concerns, we typically do not remove parking just to improve visibility for private driveways unless there are significant safety issues, such as:
- A known and significant safety concern; or
- Access involving exceptionally high traffic turnover, such as at busy commercial premises.
As part of our investigation, we looked at crash data from 2019 to 2023 and found no crashes related to driveways within 50 meters of the intersection. However, we plan to install a raised table and narrow the intersection to address your concerns. These changes are meant to slow down cars turning at the intersection, making it safer.
Zebra Crossing
- Make it a zebra crossing.
The project aims to make the intersection safer without spending too much money. Adding a zebra crossing now would need more infrastructure and costs. However, the design allows for adding a zebra crossing in the future if necessary.
Miscellaneous
- Completely unnecessary surely there are better things to spend money on.
Thank you for providing your feedback.
This project was initiated as part of a local board-supported initiative, with project selection guided by public requests received either through Auckland Transport or directly from the local community.
While not everyone may agree with all aspects of the project, the feedback indicates that the community does support the initiative.

About the project
In response to community concerns of speeding drivers and pedestrian safety, we are proposing to install a raised crossing and traffic islands on Riverton Road.
The raised crossing will reduce driver speeds entering and exiting at the intersection with Porchester Road, while making it safer for people to get to the local schools, shops and bus stops.
When deciding location of the crossing point, we considered the distance needed for motorists to see. The area needs to be clear of cars, trees or any other objects that might block the view of the pedestrians.
We are also improving the layout of bus stops on Porchester Road to ensure there is enough space for visibility and bus use.
What we are proposing
We are proposing to build a raised safety platform and install traffic islands on Riverton Drive
Porchester Road and Riverton Drive Drawing
The changes in the proposal include:
- Building a new raised safety platform on Riverton Road to reduce entry and exit speeds at the intersection with Porchester Road.
- Installing tactile pavers at all road crossing points. Tactile pavers are yellow guidance paving markers which help people find their way to crossings and safely across roads.
- Installing signs and paint new road markings.
- Adding broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times) to improve visibility and ensure parked cars do not block the crossing point on Riverton Drive and the bus stops on Porchester Road.
These improvements would remove 26 on-street parking spaces on Porchester Drive by the bus stops and the intersection and 10 on-street parking spaces on Riverton Drive to ensure visibility and safety of the crossing. We understand removing parking can be inconvenient, so we have minimised the removal of parking as much as possible, whilst also improving the safety of the raised safety platform.
Benefits and impacts
This project aims to improve safety and visibility
We want to work with you to deliver safer roads in your neighbourhood. These changes would:
- Improve safety for pedestrians, especially tamariki crossing the road.
- Improve visibility between motorists and people waiting to cross the road.
- Slow motorists to a safer speed at the crossing point and discourage unsafe driving at the intersection.
- Make it more comfortable for everyone, including people with prams and wheelchairs, to cross the road as the crossing is level with the footpath.
- Keeping bus stop surroundings clear to enable safe stopping for buses
What we want your feedback on
We are seeking feedback from nearby residents and businesses on our proposal to build a new raised safety platform at the intersection of Porchestor Road and Riverton Drive, Randwick Park.
