About the Project:

We are making safety improvements outside the Pooks Road shops in

Rānui.

This is in response to requests raised by the community to provide a safer crossing for people who regularly access the train station and local shops.

The changes we’re making in July/ August 2025

  • Converting the existing courtesy crossing to a raised zebra crossing to slow drivers on approach and give priority to people on foot and people on bikes when crossing the road
  • Upgrading the existing pram crossings and yellow tactile pavers at the crossing points to help vision impaired people find their way to crossings and safely cross the road
  • Installing bollards at the parking bay on approach to the crossing and outside the shops to prevent cards from blocking visibility around the crossing
  • Painting new bus stop markings for a clearer and safer access to the bus stop near the crossing

A drawing on the right hand side of this page shows where the changes will be installed.

Benefits to your community

  • The new zebra crossing markings will give priority to people crossing the road to access the train station and local shops.
  • Crossing is more visible to motorists and slows drivers to a safer speed
  • New road markings and signs clarify right of way, improve safety by minimising risk of collisions and ensure compliance with traffic regulations
