About the project
We’re responding to safety concerns raised by the school and community about the lack of crossing facilities outside Peninsula Primary School in Te Atatū Peninsula.
Thanks to the Henderson-Massey Local Board Transport Capital Fund, we’ll be installing new crossing facilities that will prioritise people crossing, especially our tamariki and the local community who walk to and from school.
The changes we're making
Upgrade the existing crossing island outside the school (between 22 & 24 Waipani Road) to a raised zebra crossing to slow drivers on approach and prioritise people crossing, as drivers must stop and wait for them.
Install a school patrol (kea) crossing and poles, put up new signs and road markings so drivers know they’re near a school and need to slow down
Install belisha beacon signs by the crossing. These are orange discs which warn motorists they are approaching a crossing, especially at night
Install tactile pavers which are yellow guidance markers at the crossing points to help vision impaired people cross the road safely
Rebuild the footpath on both sides of the crossing to provide more room and a safe area to wait before crossing the road.
Rebuild the driveway at #19 Waipani Road and adjusting the berm outside property #21 to make way for the crossing improvements
Benefits to your community
Safer crossings for children and people with different accessibility needs
Encourages walking, biking, and scootering – which is healthier and better for the environment
Helps reduce traffic congestion around the school
Raises driver awareness that they’re entering a school zone
New road markings and signsclarify right of way, improve safety by minimising risk of collisions, and ensures compliance with traffic regulations
What happens next
We will install these changes in January 2026.
Any change to the plan will be updated on this page.
We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place.
