We aim to improve the safety of Papakura Intermediate School students crossing Settlement Road, Papakura.
Our plan is to upgrade the existing refuge crossing on Settlement Road by installing new push button pedestrian midblock signals. The signals will only be activated by pedestrians waiting to cross the road.
This plan was created after Papakura Intermediate, and the local community expressed concerns about student safety. It aims to make the crossing more visible especially as it is near a bend in the road, and a heavy truck main route.
What the upgrade includes
• Installing a new push-button pedestrian crossing
• Installing yellow tactile pavers which to help guide visually impaired people to find their way and safely cross the road.
• New road markings and appropriate road signage
Benefits to your community
• Safer and a controlled crossing that will increase the pedestrian confidence that drivers will stop before crossing the road
• Encourage more students to walk to school independently rather than arriving at school by car
• Traffic signals will improve the visibility of the crossing by alerting drivers that people are waiting to cross and can adjust their speed to slow down and stop.
