About the project
Safety improvements at the Pakuranga Road, Hutchinsons Road, and Aberfeldy Avenue intersection
We are proposing to enhance safety at high-risk intersections throughout Auckland.
This project aims to improve safety at the intersection of Pakuranga Road, Hutchinsons Road, and Aberfeldy Avenue, which is currently ranked as the 7th highest risk intersection in Auckland due to its poor crash history involving turning movements. The proposal is expected to significantly reduce the likelihood of crashes at the intersection and enhance safety for all road users.
Crash history: between 2020 and 2024, 14 crashes were reported, including four serious injury crashes and six minor injury crashes. Six of these crashes involved vulnerable road users (pedestrians, cyclists, or motorcyclists). The severity of these high-risk crash types underscores the need for safety enhancements, particularly when considering the mix of surrounding land uses.
What we’re planning to do before June 2027
We are proposing the following safety upgrades at the Pakuranga Road, Hutchinsons Road, and Aberfeldy Avenue intersection:
Install traffic lights and create new pedestrian crossings at the intersection
Widening footpaths around the intersection
Adding cycle ramps to provide safer access for people on bikes
Relocating existing bus stops closer to the new signals so passengers have a safe place to cross Pakuranga Road
Ensuring safe access to nearby destinations, including supermarkets, petrol stations, reserves, and the fire station
You can view the proposed layout in the attached plans.
How this will benefit your neighbourhood
These improvements will make the intersection safer and more convenient for everyone, whether you’re driving, cycling, or walking.
Improved safety for people turning at the intersection
Safe crossing for bus stop users and people accessing local facilities
A clearer and safer road layout for the community
Overall, the project will improve safety for all users, making it easier to use and better connected for everyone living, working, or travelling through the area.
What happens next
We want to hear your feedback on:
Any local knowledge or observations that may help refine the design
Any operational considerations we should be aware of
Suggestions that could improve the final layout or construction approach
How to provide feedback
Please fill out the survey on our website if you would like to share local knowledge, show your support for the project, or let us know if we have missed anything. Alternatively, email us at engagementfeedback@johnstaff.co.nz. Please use “Pakuranga–Hutchinsons Intersection” in the subject line.
We would love to hear your feedback until 29 May 2026
