About the project
We are planning safety improvements on Owairaka Avenue to make crossing the road safer and easier for everyone, especially children and families walking to and from Owairaka Park.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on the proposed changes.
Why are changes needed?
We have heard from members of the community that the current pedestrian refuge outside 51 Owairaka Avenue is no longer working well for the number of people using it. Many pedestrians, particularly children, find the refuge narrow and difficult to use, and it can be challenging to judge traffic safely when crossing.
As more people walk in the area, it is important that the crossing point is safe, visible and comfortable for everyone.
What is being proposed?
To improve safety on Owairaka Avenue, we are proposing to:
Install a new zebra crossing at street level to create a clearly marked and easy to see crossing point
Remove the existing pedestrian refuge outside 51 Owairaka Avenue
Remove one on street parking space outside 55 Owairaka Avenue so drivers have a clear view of people waiting to cross
These changes are planned to be completed before June 2026.
How will this benefit the neighbourhood?
The proposed upgrade will:
Make it safer and easier to walk to Owairaka Park and nearby homes
Provide a more visible and predictable place for people to cross and for drivers to expect pedestrians
Better support families, school children and people who may need extra time or space to cross
Respond to the growing number of people walking in the area
What happens next
The engagement period has now been closed, and we are reviewing the feedback.
We’ll post the outcome of this proposal and a summary of community feedback on our website.
Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
