We’re responding to requests from the community to make Hibiscus Coast Highway in Orewa safer and easier for people to walk and cycle by building a new shared path, that will connect two existing footpaths between #228 and #258. This will fill in the missing gap so that everyone in the community can enjoy a safe, well-connected walking route.

This project is part of our Footpath Programme, which aims to create safer, convenient and well-connected walking options in your community.

The changes we’re making in 2026

  • Install a new concrete shared path along Hibiscus Coast Highway to improve access and connectivity for people on foot and on bikes.
  • Install pram crossings and tactile pavers at key crossing points to make it easier and safer for people with mobility needs and those pushing prams or strollers. Tactile pavers are yellow guidance markers to help visually impaired people cross the road safely.
  • Regrade grass berms to match the new footpath alignment and improve accessibility.
  • Reconstruct driveways impacted by the new footpath and kerb alignment.
  • Clear vegetation and prune trees where necessary to ensure safe and unobstructed access for footpath users.
  • Paint no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) to clear access and ensure visibility at the crossing points along Hibiscus Coast Highway.

A drawing on the next page shows where the changes will be installed.

Benefits to your community

  • Shared paths make it safer for the community by separating motorists from people on foot and on bikes. Widening the path allows for both pedestrians and cyclists to use the path safely.
  • Pram crossings make it safer and more convenient for people pushing prams or strollers and ensure those with mobility needs can access crossings more easily.
  • Well-maintained footpaths are safer for people who walk and ride their bikes and scooters, reducing the risk of being hurt or injured.
  • More footpaths make it easier and stress-free for the community to move around the neighbourhood, offering better connections to schools, parks, public transport and other local amenities.
