About the project

We’ve received requests from West Harbour School to address safety concerns for people crossing the road outside the school, especially school children.

This street is well known by residents for speeding drivers who use Oreil Ave to get to and from the motorway near Westgate or Royal Road, to avoid heavy traffic and lengthy delays on busy main roads.

We're upgrading this section of Oreil Ave, to ensure students safety while travelling to school and better walking access for the community to local amenities. We want to provide you with safe, convenient, and well-connected travel options.

We plan to upgrade the crossing by March 2025 which includes:

  • Raising the existing crossing outside West Harbour School so its level with the footpath, to ensure people crossing can be seen by motorists
  • Install a new crossing island where people can safely wait when crossing the street. This is a small section of pavement within the median strip, surrounded by concrete. It helps people crossing to safely wait for a gap in traffic (while giving way to motorists) to finish crossing the road.
  • Widening the footpath on the southern side of the crossing which gives more room to wait to cross
  • Installing tactile pavers which are yellow guidance paving markers at the crossing points to help vision impaired people cross the road
  • Moving the bus stop near Manutewhau Walk to outside 113 Oreil Ave to make way for the new crossing improvements
  • Painting no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) to clear access and helps with visibility to see people using the crossing.
  • Painting new road markings and installing signs so motorists know they are near a school, to slow on approach and to give priority to people crossing the road here.

Benefits to your community

  • Improves safety for everyone of different accessibility needs and for speed reduction outside the school
  • Encourages drivers to slow down and take extra care when approaching the school crossing and improves visibility between motorists and people crossing the road
  • Pram crossings make it safer and more convenient for people pushing prams or strollers to cross roads. It helps ensure those with mobility needs can navigate crossings more easily.
  • New road markings and signs clarify right of way, improve safety by minimising risk of collisions, and ensures compliance with traffic regulations.
  • Walking is good for the environment and good for your health. It helps reduce reliance on cars for local trips, decreasing traffic congestion and reducing our carbon emissions.
