About the Project
We’re upgrading a section of Onewa Road, between the Birkenhead Ave intersection and Kauri Glen Road, to make it stronger, safer and ready for future growth in Birkenhead as part of our Summer Road Reno regular road maintenance programme.
Over 20,000 vehicles use it daily. This upgrade is more than just a new road surface – it’s an investment in the future of Birkenhead
Our work will make the road stronger, safer, and better prepared for bad weather.
Phase 1 is a 2-week upgrade, Phase 2 will be done in Jan 2026.
We’ll be improving stormwater drainage, rebuilding the road foundation, and resurfacing the road.
This could include a dynamic lane (which we would shift during peak travel periods). This means 2 lanes citybound in the morning and 2 lanes towards Birkenhead in the afternoon to manage peak travel.
The Summer Road Reno renewals programme is part of our ongoing investment to maintain and improve Auckland’s transport network, making roads safer, more reliable, and helping to keep Auckland moving.
By upgrading and maintaining roads across the region, we’re making them safer, more reliable, and ready to support our growing city.

The work we’ll be doing and traffic management & detours
We’ll be doing work in several for approximately 2 weeks (weather dependent).
We’ll be working 24/7 to deliver this project as quickly as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience. We know construction, particularly at night – can be disruptive. We’ll try to keep noise levels down.
We aim to start work on time but factors outside our control, such as weather, could mean a delayed timeline. If the delay is significant, we’ll let you know and update the webpage regularly.
In advance of our start date there will be digital signs set up along the route to inform the community about the closure and traffic directions for surrounding roads, also see the maps on our webpage.
Expect traffic delays, especially during peak times. 6 bus stops will be temporarily closed at different times, and some services will be affected – please use the AT mobile app or the QR codes on posters available at the effected bus stops for more information.
Follow all traffic signs, signals, and directions for safety. Take care while driving, walking, or cycling in the area, especially if you live along one of the nearby routes.
Driveway and vehicle access to your property will be restricted when we work outside your property. If your driveway is restricted, you will need to park nearby and walk home. On-street parking will be limited.
Footpaths could be impacted, accessible options will be shared with local residents.
Council waste and recycling collection will continue as normal. If access to your bin collection spot is restricted, our team will assist you with an alternative location.
