About the Project

We’re upgrading a section of Onewa Road, between the Birkenhead Ave intersection and Kauri Glen Road, to make it stronger, safer and ready for future growth in Birkenhead as part of our Summer Road Reno regular road maintenance programme.

  • Over 20,000 vehicles use it daily. This upgrade is more than just a new road surface – it’s an investment in the future of Birkenhead
  • Our work will make the road stronger, safer, and better prepared for bad weather.
  • Phase 1 is a 2-week upgrade, Phase 2 will be done in Jan 2026.
  • We’ll be improving stormwater drainage, rebuilding the road foundation, and resurfacing the road.
  • This includes a dynamic lane at certain times (which we would shift during peak travel periods). This means 2 lanes citybound in the morning and 2 lanes towards Birkenhead in the afternoon to manage peak travel.

The Summer Road Reno renewals programme is part of our ongoing investment to maintain and improve Auckland’s transport network, making roads safer, more reliable, and helping to keep Auckland moving.

By upgrading and maintaining roads across the region, we’re making them safer, more reliable, and ready to support our growing city.

  • We aim to start work on time but factors outside our control, such as weather, could mean a delayed timeline. If the delay is significant, we’ll let you know and update the webpage regularly.
  • In advance of our start date there will be digital signs set up along the route to inform the community about the closure and traffic directions for surrounding roads, also see the maps on our webpage.
