About the project
In Feb 2024, we told the community that we would install a roadside safety barrier adjacent to 1011 Old North Road to provide a safer section of road for vehicles, motorcycles and cyclists.
Construction Update
- We originally planned to do this work in March-April 2024, but we had some delays due to funding approval.
- The work has now been confirmed to start in December 2024.
The changes we’re making in December 2024
- New crash barrier (roadside safety barrier) outside the curve of the road reserve, with a safety fence behind the barrier for people on foot or people cycling.
- Associated civil works including pavement widening and berm regrading which involves rounding out the soil and ensuring it’s level to install the crash barrier.
The drawing which can be downloaded on the right hand side of this webpage shows where we’ll be working.
How this benefits your community
- Crash barriers or roadside safety barriers installed along the side of the road absorb the impact of a collision and prevent run-off-road crashes.
- Barriers catch vehicles before they hit something harder, like a pole, tree or run off the road into a ditch or down an embankment. In this case, it’s to protect vehicles from coming off the road into the culvert.
- The Rodney district has one of the highest rates of deaths and serious injuries from crashes in the Auckland region, and Old North Road is considered a high-risk rural road for crashes. This is one of the actions we can take to ensure everyone gets where they need to and home safely.
What happens next
- We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place.
- Our contractor plans to begin construction the first week of December 2024.
- They will contact you closer to the time to confirm a start date and hours of work. We expect this work to take 6-8 weeks.
- During construction there will be traffic management in place with one-lane closed to through traffic.
- You will have access to your property at all times.
- Please plan ahead and follow all traffic management staff and signs.
- Any changes to the plan, will be updated on our website
