Improving road safety along Old North Road, Kumeu
Kia ora,
As part of AT’s road safety programme, we will be installing rumble strips (also called Audio Tactile Pavement Markings) on the centre line in some parts of the Old North Road between Inland Road and Terry Smyth Drive.
This stretch of road is considered high-risk for crashes, often involving drivers losing control or head-on collisions. The project aims to improve safety for all road users.
The changes we’re making in 2026
Install rumble strip on the centreline from Inland Road to Ararimu Valley Road. Rumble strips are small bumps working as warning lines on the road to alert drivers that they are driving outside their lane. When the car drives above them, they make a noise and vibrate (rumbling) through the wheels, which can be felt inside the car.
Install new electronic warning signs to alert drivers to slow down on tight curves and bends between Ararimu Valley Road and Terry Smyth Drive
A drawing showing the detailed sites of changes can be seen on the right-hand-side panel of this page.
Benefits to your community
Make the road safer by reducing the risk of head-on or run-off-road crashes.
Warn drivers early if they drift out of their lane by creating a sound and vibration inside the car.
Help drivers stay alert and aware, especially at night or in poor weather.
Protect all road users — drivers, passengers, cyclists, and people on foot.
Rumble strips are a proven safety measure that provide markers you can see, hear, and feel, helping make Old North Road safer for everyone.
What happens next
We will be in touch with local residents before any work takes place.
Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
