Oakleigh Avenue and Spartan Road Intersection Improvement Project
About the project
Proposal outcome
In August 2025 we proposed intersection improvements at the Oakleigh Avenue and Spartan Road intersection, Papatoetoe. After reviewing all the feedback we received, we are proceeding with the work as planned.
What happens next
We anticipate the changes will be constructed in mid-2026. We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place.

Making the Oakleigh Avenue and Spartan Road intersection safer for all road users!
This project is part of Auckland Transport’s High‐Risk Intersection programme, a safety improvement programme that prioritises safety interventions at high-risk intersections in Auckland.
Between 2019 and 2023, 10 crashes were recorded at this intersection, resulting in five minor injuries. Notably, nine of these crashes involved drivers failing to give way. Site observations indicate that vehicles often roll through the intersection without stopping, particularly on Oakleigh Avenue, where drivers also tend to approach at speed. Although no fatal or serious crashes have occurred, the nature of these high-risk crash types, combined with increasing traffic and heavy vehicle volumes, underscores the need for safety enhancements.
We are Proposing the following safety improvements at the intersection:
The proposal is expected to significantly reduce the likelihood of crashes at the intersection and enhance the safety of all road users by:
Installing a roundabout at the intersection of Oakleigh Avenue and Spartan Road to reduce the speed of vehicles approaching the intersection and to reduce delays at the intersection.
Installing new road markings and signage, including “SLOW” markings on the approaches to the new roundabout and electronic signs on Spartan Road that display the speed of approaching vehicles.

Benefits and Impacts
The roundabout will slow vehicle speeds and allow for safer crossing and turning movements
New footpath connections and pram ramps will improve safety and accessibility for all pedestrians, particularly those with prams, wheelchairs, or mobility scooters.
A better layout at this intersection will make it easier for drivers to navigate and minimise any confusion on who has priority
Parking changes will involve reprioritising eight parking spaces, six on Westbrooke Avenue and another two on Oakleigh Avenue to formalise the broken yellow lines.
What happens next
The survey has now been closed, and we are reviewing the feedback.
We’ll post the outcome of this proposal and a summary of community feedback on our website.
Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
