Helping people move safer and better on Newton Road, Eden Terrace
About the project
Newton Road is an important road for travel in central Auckland, carrying about 26,000 vehicles a day. It is home to several shops, offices, apartments, and other commercial buildings that attract thousands of commuters and visitors across Tāmaki Makaurau.
Three clearway sections on the road - roughly between France Street and St Benedicts Street in the east bound direction currently allow 30-minute parking (P30) between the morning and afternoon peak periods on weekdays.
People in the area have told us there are still issues with traffic flow at the times of day when the clearway hours aren't in effect. Cars that park in outside of clearway periods can significantly hinder the flow of traffic in that lane, causing congestion, delays, and safety and visibility issues for people trying to manoeuvre around them.
There have also been some car crashes in this area because of the parked cars.
The change we're making
After investigating the situation, we have decided to extend the hours of the three clearways that sit on the eastbound side of Newton Road, roughly between France St and St Benedicts Street, to 7am-7pm, Monday-Friday.
Between 8am and 6pm on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, people can still park for a maximum of 30 minutes (P30). The design drawings on this page provide more details about the clearways and signs that will display the new hours.
This change will ensure this part of Newton Road remains clear and open to the flow of traffic all day on weekdays, when the area is busiest.
Because these clearways are so small, a wide variety of parking options off Newton Road are available, and the clearways are in front of very few shops, we expect the impacts to businesses to be minimal.
What happens next
We anticipate the new hours for these clearways will go into effect later in 2025. We will be in touch with residents and businesses in the area at least two weeks prior to the changes taking effect.
