Consultation Outcome

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on our proposal to install broken yellow lines at the end of Newell Street.

While some people supported the proposal to improve access for rubbish collection vehicles, most submitters opposed it due to concerns about the loss of on-street parking and the use of permanent parking restrictions on an issue that occurs primarily on rubbish collection days.

After considering the feedback received and alternative options, Auckland Transport has decided not to proceed with this proposal.

How you can help

Rubbish collection vehicles can still have difficulty turning around at the end of the cul-de-sac when vehicles are parked there. To support safe and efficient rubbish collection, we encourage residents and visitors to keep the end of the cul-de-sac clear on rubbish collection days.

Please also share this information with members of your household and neighbours who may not be aware of these access issues.

What happens next

Auckland Transport will monitor access at the end of the cul-de-sac over a six-month period, starting in October 2026. If access or safety concerns continue, we may need to reconsider permanent parking changes in the future

Project Overview

We're proposing safety and access improvements at the cul‑de‑sac end of Newell Street, Point Chevalier. This proposal responds to a request from the Auckland Council (AC) waste management operations team to improve the safety of rubbish collection services on the street.

Currently, vehicles parking at the end of the cul-de-sac restricts the ability of collection trucks to safely manoeuvre and turn. As a result, trucks are often required to reverse the length of Newell Street, creating a safety risk for both operators and the community.


The changes we're proposing

  • Install broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times) at the end of the cul-de-sac on Newell Street.
  • Remove four on-street parking spaces to improve vehicle access and manoeuvrability.

These changes aim to improve safety and ensure service vehicles, including rubbish trucks, can access and operate in the street more safely and efficiently.
