New road layout for Ararimu Road, Drury
Safety Improvements at Ararimu Road & Great South Road Intersection
April 2026 update
We are proceeding with the project as proposed.
The project scope and budget allow us to deliver the minor intersection improvements already outlined, but do not provide for more significant changes to the intersection such as widening the road or the wider Ararimu Road corridor at this time. We’ll continue to monitor this part of the network as part of our wider programme and consider other treatments in the future if funding and priorities allow.
Thank you for your feedback.
Background
We’re making important changes to the intersection of Ararimu Road and Great South Road to improve safety for everyone on the road.
As the area continues to grow—with more homes, businesses, and easy motorway access—traffic through this intersection has increased. Unfortunately, it’s also seen several crashes, including a tragic fatality in 2021. Since then, we’ve monitored the intersection closely and recorded three more crashes.
Our investigation shows that modifying the road layout and updating signage will help drivers approaching from Ararimu Road to better see the intersection, slow down, stop, and check for traffic.
What’s Changing
- Removing the left-turn slip lane from Ararimu Road
- Making the intersection squarer with a new stop line and shoulder flush markings
- Extending the right-turn bay on Great South Road
- Installing new road signs and updating road markings
Community Benefits
- Safer intersection for all road users
- Smoother, more predictable journeys
