Improving bus services in Māngere

On 12 April 2026 we're making changes to bus services in Māngere to provide better connections to the airport industrial area, and to make it easier to make local trips using buses.

These new bus services need new bus stops, and on a section of Westney Road, an amendment to the heavy vehicle restriction, which would allow buses to travel on the road. This webpage will give you more information about these new bus stops and give you the chance to give your feedback on them. Use the survey at the bottom of the page

Feedback is open until 4pm, 10 September 2025.

These changes are funded by Auckland Council’s Climate Action Transport Targeted Rate (CATTR).

Why we’re making these changes

Whether people choose to drive, walk, cycle, bus, train or ferry their way around the region, Auckland Transport supports viable options that make journeys quicker, easier and safer.

This will enable what matters most to Aucklanders: a convenient, well-connected, accessible and reliable transport system.

Transport choices will meet the varying needs of Aucklanders so they can live their lives and enjoy our region now and into the future as we continue to grow.

Achieving the vision will require great public transport, an efficient and sustainable transport network and safe and seamless journeys for everyone.

The changes we’re proposing

  • Changes to the 324 bus route will include the bus travelling along Westney Road, connecting the airport industrial area to Māngere town centre and Otahuhu train station.
  • Amending the existing restriction on Westney Road, which currently prohibits vehicles greater than 3,500kg from travelling on this section of Westney Road. This would be amended to also allow buses to use this section of road. The restriction for other vehicles greater than 3,500kg travelling on this section of Westney Road would remain in place. Signs on the road would state: No Heavy Vehicles Except Buses. (Please see Map 1 below, showing the area of proposed change.)

The bus stops we’re adding

We're planning new bus stops on the following streets. View the plans below and if you have any feedback, please complete the survey at the bottom of the page.

The bus stop placements are based on a 400m spacing between stops, which gives optimal distance for people in the surrounding areas to walk to these stops.

Bus stops are planned for the following roads:

  • Kirkbride Road
  • Westney Road
  • Timberly Road
  • Verissimo Drive.

Kirkbride Road (Māngere)

We are proposing to put in one new pair of bus stops on Kirkbride Road. The exact locations of these new bus stops are shown below. (These and other drawings are also downloadable as a PDF in the documents to the right, labelled Kirkbride Road proposed new bus stop locations.)

Image 1 (above) shows the proposed location of two new bus stops at 283 and 296 Kirkbride Road, and a new pedestrian crossing refuge.

Westney Road (Māngere).

We are proposing to put in two new pairs of bus stops along Westney Road. The exact locations of these new bus stops are shown below. (These and other drawings are also downloadable as a PDF in the documents to the right, labelled Westney Road proposed new bus stop locations.)

Timberly Road (Māngere)

The heavy vehicle restriction amendment proposed

We're proposing to amend the existing heavy vehicle restriction on Westney Road, which currently prohibits vehicles greater than 3,500kg from travelling on this section of Westney Road. This would be updated to allow buses to use this section of road. The restriction for other vehicles greater than 3,500kg travelling on this section of Westney Road would remain in place. Signs on the road would state: No Heavy Vehicles Except Buses.

Map 1 (above) shows the area of proposed change to heavy vehicle restrictions to allow buses to use this portion of road.

Next steps

AT will engage with residents and businesses near the the proposed new bus stops, and welcomes feedback from anyone in the community who may be affected by the changes.

All feedback will be reviewed and a decisions report will be compiled. The final decisions report will be published online here, and shared with people who provide feedback and let us know that they would like to keep informed on progress of the project.

Once the new bus stop locations and designs are finalised, AT will communicate more details around when construction is expected to start and what the impacts of that would be.
