About the project

Improving our customers experience on public transport is important to us. Better accessibility, reliability and frequency of bus services and routes connects you to schools, sports, local amenities, and work. We want to make travelling through Avondale by bus comfortable and easier for you to enjoy getting around your neighbourhood. More reliable journeys, with improved connections both locally and into the city centre.

Bus stop #8144 was relocated in late 2022 when traffic lights were installed at the intersection of Walsall Street, Great North Road and the new access road for the developments on the western side of Great North Road, opposite the Avondale Police Station.

The developments in Avondale town centre have made this a popular bus stop for locals travelling to New Lynn by bus.

The changes we're making

  • Installing new standard size bus shelter to bus stop #8144. This may be an advertising bus shelter, like the one on the opposite side of Great North Road.
  • Correct positioning and road markings of the bus stop box and bus stop sign.
  • Correct road text at both bus stops.

There will be no changes to on-street parking arrangements are proposed as part of this project.

During the project design phase, some errors with the previous installation of the relocated bus stop road markings have been discovered. This project will correct those errors by relocating the bus stop box slightly to the north. This will allow buses to depart the bus stop more easily. Additional road text will be added to the bus stop on the opposite side of the road as well.

Benefits to your community

We have an ongoing programme across the city to improve bus stop infrastructure. Bus shelters provide protection from rain or wind and offer a place to sit while waiting for the bus.

As more new residents move into the developments in this part of Avondale, this bus stop will be increasingly important for those wanting to use public transport to access New Lynn. This is the only New Lynn bound bus stop in this stretch of Great North Road that does not currently have a bus shelter.
