Mount Wellington Highway-Hillside Road Intersection, Mount Wellington - No Stopping At All Times (broken yellow lines)
Consultation Outcome
We want to thank the community of Mount Wellington Highway and Hillside Road for your engagement and feedback on our proposal to improve driver visibility and safety at the Mount Wellington Highway and Hillside Road intersection. We plan to achieve this by extending no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) on the south-eastern corner of the intersection and painting 20 metres of new no stopping at all times, starting from the northeastern corner and continuing along the northern side of the intersection.
After reviewing the feedback we received, we will be proceeding with the following change to the original design to better reflect community input:
- We will extend the no stopping at all times restriction (broken yellow lines) on the northern side of Hillside Road by 10 metres.
Updated Drawing - Post Consultation

What happens next
We anticipate these changes will be installed by May 2026.
Community Feedback
Thank you for helping us make better decisions for your neighbourhood, informed by your local knowledge.
We received seven submissions via online survey.
Summary of the feedback count:
- 6 people expressed that the changes would benefit the community.
- 1 respondent advised that the proposal would not benefit the community.
- All respondents provided suggestions to improve the proposal.
Most of the supportive feedback we received indicated this proposal would provide safer access when exiting or entering Hillside Road to and from Mount Wellington Highway. It would also improve visibility for oncoming traffic.
Below is a summary of your feedback and our responses.
Concerns
Concern about difficulty exiting the intersection due to incoming traffic both ways.
The proposed broken yellow lines will improve visibility for drivers exiting Hillside Road onto Mount Wellington Highway, making access to the road safer and more convenient.
Suggestions to improve the project
Suggest two-stage crossings: one across the side street and another on the northern arm as well.
This suggestion needs to be investigated separately, so we will refer it to the appropriate team for investigation.
Extend no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines)
- Suggest extending the no stopping at all times about three car lengths. This would allow two cars to queue to turn right without blocking incoming traffic and prevent long queues from spilling onto Mount Wellington Highway.
- Suggest extending the no stopping at all times further up Hillside Road to keep it clear.
- This will help heavy vehicles such as rubbish trucks and recycling vehicles access Mt Richmond Development safer and easier.
- This will improve safe access for cars entering and exiting at the same time.
- Suggest extending the no stopping at all times by at least one car length (about 5metres) on both sides of Hillside Road or at least 10 metres from the intersection on both sides, to improve clearance and visibility.
- Suggest extending the no stopping at all times along Hillside Road, including the side opposite the new houses.
We will extend the broken yellow lines on the northern side of Hillside Road by 10 metres, as the parking needs of residents and visitors must be balanced with maintaining reasonable access to our roads.
- Suggest extending the no stopping at all times up to # 618 Mount Wellington Highway.
We need to balance parking for residents and visitors with keeping roads accessible. Extending the existing parking restriction could improve visibility, our investigation shows there is high demand for parking in this area, which is important for local residents.
After careful consideration, we will not be extending the broken yellow lines further on Mount Wellington Highway.
Traffic lights
- Suggest installing traffic lights before the intersection at either end.
Unfortunately, this suggestion is out of this project scope, but we will refer it to the appropriate team for investigation.
About the project
We’re proposing changes at the intersection of Mount Wellington Highway and Hillside Road to improve safety for all road users.
Concerns have been raised by the public about reduced visibility at the intersection of Mount Wellington Highway and Hillside Road due to parked vehicles. This limited visibility makes it difficult for drivers to safely navigate the intersection.
To address this, we are proposing to install no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) at the intersection.
What we are proposing
Mount Wellington Highway and Hillside Road Intersection, Mount Wellington - Proposal Drawing

- Extend the no stopping at all times lines (broken yellow lines) on the north-eastern corner of the intersection at Mount Wellington Highway and Hillside Road.
- Paint 20 metres of new no stopping at all times lines, starting from the northeastern corner and continuing along the northern side of the intersection.
Benefits and impacts
- Improved visibility: Clearing this space of parked cars will make it easier for drivers and pedestrians to see oncoming traffic.
- Safer navigation: The changes will help everyone move through the intersection more safely.
- The proposed changes result in a loss of 3 on-street parking spaces to provide better view of traffic at the intersection of Mount Wellington Highway and Hillside Road for drivers entering and exiting the intersection.
