About the project

We are proposing to upgrade the existing layover at the bus parking area on Mount Wellington Highway, by installing a new toilet unit for bus drivers only in late-2025. This will replace the existing temporary portaloo, which is located nearby.

The changes we’re making

• A new toilet unit for bus drivers, facing away from Mount Wellington Highway (the size of a standard twin unit)

• New footpath to provide access to the new facility

• Surface regrading, along with grass planting

• New water pipe installations will be required to connect the unit to the existing network

• No parking loss will result from these changes

Please refer to the drawing below to see where these changes apply

Background

Changes made to the Employment Relations Amendment Act 2018 (ERAA) entitles bus drivers to a 10-minute break during typical driving shifts. Under the ERAA, bus drivers must be provided with access to facilities to attend to their personal needs.

Provision of a permanent toilet unit will help enable bus drivers to have adequate rest and access facilities to tend to their personal needs without causing congestion. Drivers who are more rested are more attentive, promoting safer driving practices.
