About the project

We’re responding to concerns from the community about a lack of a crossing facility near St Lukes Mall on Morningside Drive. We heard your concerns about how difficult and unsafe it can feel to cross such a busy road, especially for people walking, using prams, mobility devices, or trying to reach nearby bus stops.

In response, we’re planning to install a new pedestrian refuge crossing near 57 Morningside Drive to make it safer and easier for people to cross.

The changes we’re making

  • New pedestrian refuge crossing near 57 Morningside Drive to provide a safer place for people to cross.
  • Associated kerb adjustments to improve visibility and help shorten crossing distances around the refuge.
  • New tactile pavers (yellow guidance tiles) on both sides of the crossing to support people who are blind or have low vision.
  • New road markings and signage to improve visibility and help all road users understand the new layout.
  • No Stopping At All Times (broken yellow lines), if required to meet safety and visibility requirements for the new crossing.
  • Parking changes: to install the refuge crossing safely, we expect to remove up to 8 on-street parking spaces.

To make space for the crossing we plan to relocate the existing bus shelter (Stop ID: 8861) from outside 65 Morningside Drive to outside 55 Morningside Drive. This change in location will no effect the bus routes.

Benefits to the Community

  • Improved safety for people crossing the road, including those with accessibility needs
  • Better access to public transport, making the bus stop safer and easier to use
  • Supports walking and travel choice by improving confidence to cross safely
  • Responds to local feedback about the need for a safer crossing point

I live opposite the Saint Lukes carpark and have seen numerous people including families and disabled sruggling to cross the traffic at this totally iadequate pedestrian entrance. I dont think this refuge will solve the problem. Busman

Regarding the pedestrian refuge I feel it does not answer pedestrian issues of complaint. The positioning of the refuge is up by the moved no20 stop. This bus starts from here, so no pedestrians crossing. The no 22 bust stop, opposite the carpark entrance is the problem spot. This is the busiest bus stop on the New Lynn route with up ti 20 people crossing at a time.
I think the answer is a pedestran crossing with lights to the left of the car entrance. (Currently no pedestrian access here, people walk in the dangerous car entrance). There is a 5 metre space for this crossing. These crossing lights would stop the constant illegal right turns from the car park with no right turn enforced.
This is a dangerous crossing at the moment and needs fixing.
