About the project

We‘ve received requests from Birkenhead Primary School to address safety concerns of people, especially students, when crossing the road to access the shops and other local amenities.

Vehicles parked near the crossing block the view between drivers and people crossing the street. This project will allow oncoming drivers to have better visibility of pedestrians at the crossing.

The changes we're making by November 2024

  • Paint “no stopping at all times” (broken yellow lines) adjacent to both sides of the crossing outside 81 Mokoia Road. We will need to reallocate road space to clear access and remove two parking spaces

Drawings on the right hand side of this webpage, show where the changes will be installed

Benefits to your community

  • Improves visibility by ensuring people crossing Mokoia Road can be seen by approaching motorists.
  • Ensures Tamariki can walk safely to and from the school gate as they are easily seen by drivers.
  • This will make it safer for people to cross the road to access the shops, school and other community facilities.

It will take one day to paint the road markings in good weather conditions. We know this may cause some inconvenience, and we will minimise this as much as possible while balancing safety concerns.

Please remember to park courteously and avoid blocking driveways. Vehicles parked illegally may receive infringement notices or be towed away.

What happens next

We are planning to install these changes in November 2024.

Any change to the plan will be updated on this page.
