Michael Jones Road - Speed hump installation
Consultation has concluded
About the project
Project summary
Everyone across Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland should be able to get to where they need to and back home safely. This includes people in cars, on bikes, on foot, on scooters, or on mobility devices.
To support the spee and to keep Aucklanders safe, we proposed some changes:
- At the Highland Park Drive intersection AT consulted on installing a roundabout with pedestrian and cyclist crossings on all legs of the intersection. We also proposed to install cycle paths and separators near the intersection so people on bikes can navigate the roundabout safely.
- Between Lewisham Street and Aberfeldy Avenue we also proposed to install a raised pedestrian crossing and upgrades to the bus stops to support the changes.
Consultation outcome
After reviewing all the feedback received, we will proceed with minor changes to the proposal:
- We will not proceed with the raised pedestrian crossing between Lewisham Road and Aberfeldy Avenue. However, we will continue to monitor this area for future improvements.
- We will proceed with the roundabout with pedestrian and cyclist crossings at the Highland Park Drive and Aviemore Drive intersection as well as the cycle lane at this location.

How did we reach this outcome?
- We considered feedback received from the local community, including key stakeholders such as emergency services and elected members, and those directly impacted by the proposed changes.
- Many locals have told us in their feedback and during our visit to local businesses that the Highland Park Drive and Aviemore Drive intersection is dangerous and confusing to navigate.
- Installing the roundabout will make it easier and safer to navigate for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists travelling along Aviemore Drive.
We’re proposing improvements in your area
Howick Local Board has identified your area for improvements. On their behalf, Auckland Transport are proposing to install speed humps along Michael Jones Drive and increase visibility at the intersection of Chapel Road and Michael Jones Drive by installing additional broken yellow lines.
This project is funded by the Local Board Transport Capital Fund. This fund is used to make improvements based on community priorities, which may not be covered by other programmes of work. The improvements will be delivered by Auckland Transport on behalf of your local board.
What we are proposing
We understand the current situation in this area is drivers speeding and Michael Jones Drive being used as a shortcut/rat run instead of traveling along Chapel Road. The increase in traffic on a local road and driver speeding is causing frustration and risk to public safety.
We have received numerous complaints about this and have proposed a solution.
What you have to say is important to us. Your local knowledge can help us make better decisions, and together, we can work towards the best outcomes for our neighbourhood.
We are proposing to:
- Install seven speed humps along Michael Jones Drive to promote safer speeds in the community
- We are proposing to install the speed humps outside number 5, 15, 27, 37, 55, 65, and 75 Michael jones Drive
- Removal of seven car parks to increase pedestrian visibility and to provide a safe space for pedestrians to cross the road increase visibility at the intersection of Chapel Road and Michael Jones Drive
Benefits and impacts
This will promote safer speeds in the community, reduce motorists using Michael Jones Drive as a thoroughfare and, provide pedestrians with a safer area to cross the road at the intersection of Chapel Road and Michael Jones Drive .
