After reviewing the feedback we received, we are proceeding with the below changes on our proposal to install a pedestrian crossing and speed humps on McLean Street and Allendale Road, Mount Albert.


  • After listening to feedback from the community, it was recognised that parking is a significant concern for residents. As a result, AT decided to shorten the length of the proposed broken yellow lines on McLean Street. This adjustment was made to ensure that 9 parking spaces remain available on the street.

Congestion

  • At the moment McLean Street is clogged nearly all the time - especially morning and afternoon/evening time with cars cutting through to get to or from the other side of Mt Albert. Parents parking both sides of the road when dropping off and picking up kids - and often, the street is blocked both ways with cars not able to move in either direction. It’s been a disaster for a long time now. If I don't leave home before 8am its pointless trying to leave until after 9am. Afternoons, and evenings if there is a school event on are the same. So many near misses of accidents, kids running across the road its well overdue.

Taking away parking spaces on both sides of the new pedestrian crossing will help reduce traffic jams by giving cars more room to pass. Also, getting rid of the planted side islands on the northern part of McLean Street will make traffic flow better since drivers won't have to stop and give way anymore.

  • Driving up or down McLean Street around 3.00 pm is a nightmare already. The traffic is already at a crawl with all the parents picking up their kids.

During school hours, you might notice a bit of traffic, but that's common in areas with schools.

  • The only time the street is busy is when the parents of the pupils drop off and collect their children, i.e. the schools and parents are responsible for getting their pupils safely into the school grounds. There is little activity in this street at weekends or during holidays! This is a ridiculous proposal and total overkill which is business as usual in Auckland!

The new pedestrian crossing is designed to make things safer for everyone, especially students at Elim Christian College, where safety has been a concern in the past.

  • There needs to be a dedicated pick-up and drop-off zone operating between 7.30am and 4.30pm on weekdays on McLean Street above the entrance to the school with suitable signage and the school should be responsible for asking parents to enter the street only from Allendale Road and not from New North Road. This is simple common sense and does not require excessive cost and huge disruption for surrounding residents for what is a very small school. In addition, the school has room on their lower field which would enable them to create a dedicated pick-up and drop-off area.

The school has the authority to decide how to use their land, and we can only suggest changes within the road reserve area. Removing the planted islands on the northern side of the road will help traffic flow better since drivers won't need to stop and give way.

Parking Spaces

  • Try putting up a temporary speed reduction pole powered by solar energy. Even better, instead of getting rid of car parks allow more car parking.
  • Removing parking spaces will only make access to residential properties in McLean Street inaccessible for visitors and deliveries.

To make sure pedestrians using the new crossing are safe, it's important to provide clear sight distances for both them and drivers. Removing parking spots at this location will help keep visibility clear, making it safer for everyone. We've also updated the design to give back nine parking spots to the community, reducing the total parking loss from 21 to 12. This has been done to address feedback on parking loss while still meeting safety requirements.

Miscellaneous

  • You have provided no evidence that there is a problem that your solution is trying to solve. How many fatalities or serious accidents have occurred in Mclean Street in the past five years? Even if there has been some and there is a problem there are better ways to solve it.
  • I would very much also like to know who requested these changes together with evidence of any incidents involving children from the school accessing the school entrance. It is high time AT got out and talked to Aucklanders and asked them what they want rather than imposing changes which make no sense at all. Your letter of 24 October 2024 states that these changes are part of a bigger transport plan - we would all dearly like to know what that bigger plan is for our area!!

Local Board and Elim Christian College requested the installation of a crossing facility outside the school to enhance safety for everyone. Adding 'No Stopping At All Times' markings will make sure drivers and pedestrians see each other clearly. Also, by removing the chicanes to open the road to two lanes, results in less traffic jams.

About the project

We are proposing changes on local roads around Elim Christian College to help students cross the road safely, slow down drivers and ease congestion.

On Mclean Street we propose to install a new zebra crossing outside the school gate and a new speed hump at the northern end of the road. At the southern of the road, we propose to remove the speed chicane. This will open the road to two lanes and help reduce congestion during school pick up and drop off times. The existing speed hump will remain but be upgraded. We also propose to install a new speed hump on Allendale Road to help reduce speeds.

These changes are part of a bigger transport plan

Auckland Transport, local boards and ward councillors are working together to prioritise and address local road safety concerns. This project is funded by the Local Board Transport Capital Fund Programme.

This programme uses funding within Auckland Transport’s annual budget to deliver on Local Board initiatives for local areas and communities

What we are proposing

The changes in the proposal include:

  • Building a zebra crossing at #6 McLean Street, Mount Albert. Zebra crossings provide safer crossing facilities and gives priority to pedestrians.
  • Installing a speed hump at #10 McLean Street and #58 Allendale Road to guide drivers to slow down.
  • Remove the existing chicanes and upgrade the speed hump at #2 McLean Street.
  • Painting broken yellow lines. These improvements would include removing 21 on-street parking spaces near the zebra crossing. We understand that removing parking spaces can be inconvenient, so we have minimised the removal while maintaining good lines of sight and access.
  • New tactile pavers. These are yellow guidance paving markers to help people to find their way to crossings and safely across roads.
  • New traffic signs and streetlights to alert vehicles as they approach the speed bumps.
