About the project

Work on Maungawhau Station is nearly complete, which means it is now time to finalise the parking plan around the station. We need to ensure that parking in these remaining streets stays accessible for visitors and local businesses, while discouraging all‑day commuter parking.

The majority of on-street parking around Mount Eden is managed by paid parking, which was introduced in 2021 to help manage the high demand.
There are six streets which were not included due to City Rail Link construction. We are now looking for your feedback on our plan.

The map below provides more details on the locations.

What we are planning and why

Parking is a key part of the transport system and needs to be carefully managed. We’re planning changes that will help ensure there is parking availability for visitors and customers in the area.

We know that paid parking has increased parking availability.

In 2021, occupancy levels were at 96% during the busiest times of day, meaning it was difficult for people to find a space.

Current data shows that paid parking has significantly improved availability for visitors and shoppers to the area. Between July 2024 and June 2025 occupancy levels were 72% during the busiest times of the day.

Paid parking currently operates Monday to Friday, from 8am until 6pm in the streets around the proposal area. We plan to continue the same days and hours in the four remaining streets near the station.

The price would also be the same, $1 per hour for the first 2 hours, increasing to $2 per hour thereafter.

Managing parking through time restrictions and pricing values our precious road space and ensures those using the parking space are paying a small share of the associated costs.

The plan aligns with Room to Move: Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s Parking Strategy. Auckland Transport manages parking demand through time restrictions and paid parking initiatives.

The plan aims to deliver the following benefits:

  • Improved parking availability for visitors and customers
  • Reduces park and hide, discouraging commuters parking all day outside local shops and businesses
  • Promotes alternative travel modes to and from the station, including public transport, walking and cycling

Paid parking areas also includes 10 minutes of free parking, allowing customers to grab a coffee or quickly pick something up.

There are Loading Zones on Nikau Street, Ruru Street. There will also be pick up/drop off, mobility and bike parking immediately outside the Maungawhau station building, via the new Korari-Shaddock Street loop.

What we want your feedback on

  • How your currently use parking in the area
  • How the station opening will affect parking in the area
  • How these changes will impact parking in the area

Have we missed anything? Your local perspective and insights are invaluable for our decision-making process.

Have your say
