Matiatia Wharf - 2025 Renewal Works
About the project
Mātiatia's Ferry Terminal is the gateway to Waiheke Island and the second busiest after Downtown. We are ensuring that Waiheke’s ferry infrastructure is maintained and improved, where possible, for all users.
Auckland Transport (AT) needs to complete maintenance on multiple areas of Matiatia Wharf and renew some of the infrastructure to ensure continued safe operations.
The construction for these projects will be carried out in phases, with multiple areas being worked on simultaneously to reduce disruptions and inconvenience.
The first phase of work will include the following
- Renewal works on Pier 4
- Relocating the Coastguard to accommodate future work on Pier 2
- Terminal canopy replacements

Pier 4 renewals and Coastguard relocation
What you need to know when we start the work
We will be doing maintenance work on pier 4 that includes removing 10 piles and replacing them with 6, including a steel pile and removing and replacing the whaler system. This work is set to begin late April and will require temporary closure of Pier 4.
We will also be relocating the out-of-use fuel pump and pontoon by approximately 6 metres and placing 4 new piles. This is to accommodate the new Coastguard location and provide an alternative area for dinghy’s, enabling the existing pontoon edge to be kept clear for berthing vessels.
What to expect during construction
This work will not impact current ferry services, and we will work with ferry service providers and operators to inform you of any changes ahead of time.
Auckland Transport is working alongside specialists to ensure our work does not have any long-term impact on the local environment.
Benefits to your Community
- Matiatia is Auckland's second busiest wharf and this maintenance work will ensure continued use for all.
- Provide a dedicated space for public dinghy mooring on pier 4.
Canopy renewal works
What you need to know when we start the work
Last year, the canopy at the rear of the terminal above the bus waiting area was replaced before the summer peak. Now that we are heading back into the quieter season, the same process will be applied to the canopies along the west and south side of the terminal.
The work is expected to take place between June and August.
The project will involve corrosion treatment to existing gutters and brackets and the replacement of the canopy shades. Auckland Transport also plans to extend the southern canopy to encompass the future boarding area for the Pier 2 services.
Please note, some of this work can be noisy and some areas of the pier will be closed during construction, for your safety, take extra care when moving around the terminal and follow all signs and any instructions from staff on site.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience and understanding.
