Project Overview
We're improving safety and access on Maru Road, Takaanini. These changes support Auckland Transport’s work to improve safety, access, and connections for people walking, cycling, and using Takaanini Station.
Maru Road is an important link between Great South Road and the station. With the new pedestrian bridge at Takaanini Station under construction and future cycling improvements planned nearby, we’re upgrading this route to better serve the local community.
The changes we're planning
We’re planning to upgrade Maru Road with a new shared path and changes to the way people park on the road.
The changes include:
- A new 3‑metre‑wide shared walking and cycling path on the northern side of Maru Road, within existing kerb lines. Some existing berm space will be used to accommodate the new shared path.
- A new pedestrian and cycle crossing at Matawalu Place.
- Removal of two on‑street parking spaces to improve visibility and vehicle access (one near the Matawalu Place crossing and one near the cul‑de‑sac).
- Conversion of four parking spaces near the cul‑de‑sac to short‑stay (P5) parking to support drop‑off and pick‑up for Takaanini Station. These short‑stay spaces will complement existing park‑and‑ride facilities nearby.
Benefits for your community
- Create a safer, more direct walking and cycling route between Great South Road and Takaanini Station
- Improve road safety and visibility
- Make it easier to access public transport
- Provide short-stay parking for station drop-off and pick-up
Together, these improvements aim to make it easier and safer for people of all ages and abilities to get around the area.
What happens next
We expect to start construction by mid-June 2026. We’ll do our best to minimise disruption and will notify residents in advance of any temporary access restrictions, keeping you informed as work progresses.
