About the project

We’re making changes to improve safety for people crossing Malone Road near Malone Road Reserve.

The community has raised concerns about pedestrian safety in this area. Malone Road is a busy street that many parents and tamariki (children) use when travelling to and from Panmure District School.

To make crossing the road safer, we’re planning to upgrade the existing pram crossing outside the reserve to a school‑patrolled (Kea) crossing. This will provide a safer and more visible crossing point, especially for tamariki walking to school.

What we're planning in June/July 2026:

  • Upgrade the existing pram crossing to a school‑patrolled (Kea) crossing outside 25 Malone Road.
  • Install tactile pavers at the crossing to help people who are vision‑impaired cross the road safely.
  • Repair the existing traffic islands and install new traffic signs and road markings (limit lines) to remind drivers to stop and wait for pedestrians.
  • Add no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) outside 23–26 Malone Road. To clear access and improve visibility, we need to reallocate road space and remove approximately 3 parking spaces.
  • Install additional signs to support these changes.

Benefits to your community:

  • Improves safety for school students and teachers during the pick up and drop off times.
  • Ensures everyone in the community can move around the neighbourhood safely, offering better connections to schools, parks, public transport, and other local amenities.
  • Encourages drivers to slow down and take extra care when approaching the crossing and improves visibility between motorists and people crossing the road.

What happens next?

  • We will be in touch with residents before any work takes place.
  • Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
