About the project
Auckland Transport is proposing a new signalised crossing at the Ōrākei Road and Tonks Street intersection, in response to requests from the community.

Proposed Changes

  • Installing a new signalised mid-block crossing at the intersection of Ōrākei Road and Tonks Street. The signals will only activate when pedestrians push the button when ready to cross the road.
  • Upgrading the existing bus stop #7767 on Tonks Street side with a kassel kerb. A kassel kerb is a specially shaped kerb at bus stops that helps buses stop closer to the footpath, making it easier and safer for people to get on and off the bus.
  • Removing the kerb indent and relocating bus stop #7776 and bus shelter outside Martyn Wilson Fields on Ōrākei Road by 40m towards the roundabout.
  • New kerb buildout with upgrades to the kerb ramp at the intersection of Ōrākei Road and Tonks Street.
  • Minor tree trimming to provide clearance from the relocated bus shelter.

How will this proposal benefit your community

Auckland Transport cares for your safety. We want to make our roads safe for everyone, people walking, cycling, driving, and especially for our Tāmariki. The proposed changes would create a safer road for everyone as it would:

  • Improves safety for everyone crossing this busy road as traffic must stop.
  • Low impact on traffic flow as crossing time is only activated when pedestrians need to cross by pushing the button.
  • Provides a safe crossing location for the Tāmariki to get to and from school.

How you can have your say

We’d like to hear your thoughts on how we can refine our plans to help you move safely along these roads. Please provide your feedback by 31 March 2026.
