We’re responding to concerns raised by the community to improve crossing safety near 139 Mahurangi East Road. As more families move into the area, more people are walking to the shops, school, bus stops, and around the neighbourhood.
Thanks to the Rodney Local Board Transport Capital Fund, we’ll be installing new crossing facilities on Mahurangi East Road to provide the community with a safe, convenient crossing option and improve access to bus stops.
The changes we’re making in April 2026:
Install a new crossing island, with a side island on the northern side of 139 Mahurangi East Road and a widened footpath outside 1 Muncaster Road. The crossing islands are a small section of pavement within the median strip, surrounded by concrete. It helps people crossing safely wait for a gap in traffic (while giving way to motorists), then finish crossing the road to nearby bus stops.
Install a new crossing island near 1 Governor Grey Road so people can safely wait to cross the road.
We will need to clear access and visibility to allow buses to safely enter and exit the relocated bus stop by reallocating road space and removing 6 parking spaces outside 145, 147 & 149 Mahurangi East Road.
Install new yellow tactile pavers at the crossing points to help visually impaired people locate the facility and safely cross the road.
Relocating two bus stops to make space for the new crossing facilities:
Stop 4594 (northbound) will move to outside 124 Mahurangi East Road. The relocation will allow space to install the pram crossing so people can access the crossing island.
Stop 4945 (southbound) will move to outside 147 Mahurangi East Road. The relocation will allow space to install the pram crossing so people can access the crossing island. We will need to clear access and improve visibility for drivers and people crossing the road by reallocating road space and removing 4 parking spaces outside 135, 137, 139, Mahurangi East Road.
Add a new bus shelter for stop 4945 outside 147 Mahurangi East Road to provide shelter for those waiting to use bus services.
Build a new footpath outside 124 Mahurangi East Roadand 1 Muncaster Road to provide access to the relocated northbound bus stop.
Install pram crossings outside 124 Mahurangi East Roadand 1 Muncaster Road, making it easier for people with prams and mobility users to cross.
Install a driver feedback signoutside 2 Riverleigh Drive to improve driver awareness of their speed and encourage them to slow down in the area, especially on approach to the crossing.
A larger drawing showing the changes can be found to the right of this page.
Benefits to your community:
Improves safety for everyone with different accessibility needs, providing a facility to safely cross Mahurangi East Road and access the relocated bus stops.
Encourages drivers to slow down and take extra care when approaching the crossing.
Better access and connections to public transport, helping with bus reliability and frequency.
New road markings and signs improve safety by minimising the risk of collisions and ensuring compliance with traffic regulations.
A bus shelter improves comfort while waiting for the bus as it provides people with a place to sit and protection from the wind and rain.
Walking is good for the environment and good for your health. It helps reduce reliance on cars for local trips, decreasing traffic congestion and reducing our carbon emissions.
What happens next:
We will be in touch with residents before any work takes place.
Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
