About the project

Drivers have reported ongoing safety concerns related to bus parking on Apirana Avenue, near the Glen Innes Train Station.

Buses are allowed to park here between scheduled times and while drivers are taking their break. However, the bus parking area is too long, causing visibility issues for drivers, particularly when exiting the roundabout.

In response to concerns, we are shortening parking area on Apirana Avenue and creating a new bus break area on Line Road, near KFC.

Changes we're making

  • Apirana Avenue:
    • Shortening the length of the current bus parking area on Apirana Avenue. Replacing this section with broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times) to ensure drivers have clear visibility exiting the roundabout
    • Fewer bus parking spaces

  • Line Road:

    • Installing three new bus break stops for bus drivers on both sides of Line Road (outside KFC)
    • Painting broken yellow lines at the bus stops on Line Road to improve bus movement and create more visibility for drivers
    • Updating signs and road markings to reflect the new layout
    • Tree trimming and pruning to allow for vehicle clearance

Benefits and impacts

  • Improved visibility and movement for drivers on Apirana Avenue and Line Road
  • Less bus congestion on Apirana Avenue, as drivers will shift to Line Road for their scheduled breaks
  • Better facilities for bus drivers, supporting safe and respectful operations
  • Will accommodate future bus growth and frequency

Break areas for bus drivers

The Employment Relations Amendment Act 2018 also requires bus drivers to have regular rest breaks. These changes will help ensure these needs are met without affecting residential safety or access.
