The Issues
During its study, our Network Optimisation team found the biggest delays on this part of Onewa Road were concentrated at the Lake Road and Queen Street intersections. The two traffic lights are very close together, and if they're not properly co-ordinated, vehicles can get stopped at each intersection. This can mean longer delays for vehicles trying to get on and off the motorway, especially when the area is really busy.
There are also significant congestion issues at the right turn lane from Onewa Road onto Lake Road. Backups frequently extend beyond the turn lane, which can block the through traffic. Also, people often have to wait for multiple traffic light phases to pass before they can turn right. This has not only meant lengthy delays, but it can also create safety issues for other drivers and pedestrians if a frustrated driver decides to rush around the cars stuck in the through lane or through a red light rather than wait one more cycle to turn.
Our Proposed Solutions
To resolve these issues, we're proposing to better co-ordinate the Lake Road and Queen Street intersection traffic lights. This will help to allow multiple vehicles to pass through both intersections at once and connect to the motorway faster. It will also help reduce the likelihood of lengthy backups from one intersection spilling into and blocking the other at busy times.
We're also proposing to install queue detection technology in the Lake Road traffic lights to help address queueing issues at that intersection, particularly the Onewa Road to Lake Road right turn. Queue detection technology uses highly advanced cameras and sensors to see when there's a long line on any side of the intersection. If this were to happen in the right-turn lane to Lake Road, queue detection will send a signal for the traffic lights to hold the green light for longer so that more vehicles can turn and clear the lane.
