About the project

Kilimanjaro Drive Crossing

This project originated as a part of Local Board and Auckland Transport’s collaboration to provide pedestrian facilities across Kilimanjaro Drive near the Kilimanjaro Park.

Currently, there is no formal pedestrian connection from the eastern side of Kilimanjaro Drive to Kilimanjaro Park. With increasing pedestrian demand in the area, pedestrians are forced to cross Kilimanjaro Drive without any dedicated crossing facility, creating safety concerns, which highlights the need for improved pedestrian infrastructure.

What we’re planning to do before June 2026

  • New pedestrian refuge crossing across Kilimanjaro Drive, providing a safe place for people to pause when crossing

  • Add side islands to narrow down lane widths and slow down vehicles approaching the crossing

  • New footpath and pram crossing leading up to the refuge crossing to improve overall pedestrian access.

  • Install tactile pavers (yellow guidance markers) to assist vision impaired pedestrians

  • Broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times) to keep parked vehicles away from crossing areas and maintain clear visibility for pedestrians and drivers.

  • Removal of 10 on street parking spaces along Kilimanjaro Drive adjacent to Kilimanjaro Park to increase visibility for pedestrians using the new crossing

How this upgrade will benefit the community

  • Safer crossings for people with prams, wheelchairs, or mobility aids.

  • Better connections to local streets, and Kilimanjaro Park.
