Kerrykeel Drive/Arranmore Drive roundabout road safety improvements
Consultation Outcome
We want to thank the wider Ormiston community for their engagement on our proposal to improve road safety and install pedestrian crossings at the busy intersection of Kerrykeel Dtive and Arronmore Drive.
After carefully considering all the feedback, we are proceeding with the proposal.
What happens next
We expect to have these changes implemented by January 2026.
We'll be in touch with residents before any changes take place.
Feedback summary:
We appreciate your time, insights, and commitment to support making our roads safer for everyone.
The feedback we received reflects a mix of community perspectives and diverse inputs.
There was support for the proposal for its potential to improve safety for children walking or biking to school and overall road safety improvements.
Others raised concerns about increased traffic congestion and the impact of yellow broken lines (no stopping at all times) on street parking especially during school drop-off and pick-up times. While these concerns are valid, many of them also acknowledged the safety benefits of the proposal and offered constructive suggestions.
What you told us:
Supportive feedback:
Safety for children: People highlighted the benefit of improved safety for children walking or biking to school.
“This proposal would benefit our neighbours by making it safer for the children walking or biking to school.”
“This proposal will make it safer for the children to not only walk to and from school but also access these facilities on weekends and holidays.”
Make the crossing more visible: people suggested that measures should be put in place to improve visibility and help vehicles slow down as they approach the crossing.
“Addition of blinking lights will add visibility to drivers about the crossing ahead.”
“There needs to be a way to slow down the drivers approaching the proposed zebra crossings… Either raise the zebra crossings or put in high friction surfacing”
Suggestions include:
- Limit parking restrictions to school peak hours
- Considering traffic lights as an alternative.
- Enhancing visibility with blinking lights or upgraded street lighting
- Install red-light cameras to deter reckless driving.
- Ban parking commercial trucks on residential streets
Theme | Community Suggestion | AT Response |
Traffic lights | Install traffic lights to manage congestion and improve safety | Traffic lights are best considered for busy, multi-lane roads with consistently high traffic and pedestrian volumes. Kerrykeel Dr is a residential street with lower traffic volumes, so traffic lights aren’t the best fit. On Kerrykeel Drive, this congestion is very short term and typically limited to school start and finish times. The proposed crossing near Springside Drive is designed to improve safety for children walking to and from school. It will be patrolled during school peak times to help children cross safely. |
Parking & Broken Yellow Lines | Limit no-stopping yellow lines to school peak hours only, to avoid overflow parking | We understand on-street parking is important for residents, so we've kept removals to a minimum. Since the crossing will be used throughout the day and not just during school times, a time-based parking restriction wouldn't provide the consistent visibility required for safe crossing. To keep pedestrians and drivers safe, parking restrictions need to remain in place at all times. |
Driver visibility & Speed | Add blinking lights or install raised crossings to slow down drivers | We will install Belisha discs at the crossings, orange discs that alerts motorists they are approach a crossing and upgrade the surrounding street lighting to enhance visibility during low-light conditions. Flashing beacons aren’t suitable for residential areas due to light spill which can affect nearby homes. |
Red Light Cameras | Install red light cameras near Murphys Rd to prevent dangerous driving | Thanks for letting us know. A CRM case, CAS-1174325-Z7L5K8 has been created for the relevant team to review and investigate the matter. |
Zebra Crossing Safety | Install raised crossings or add high friction surfacing to slow vehicles near the crossing | Zebra crossings with side islands and a wider central island are considered the most effective solution for this location. These features, along with the existing roundabout which is designed to slow vehicles as they approach the intersection, will help reduce speeds and improve safety for all road users. |
Speed calming measure at Kerrykeel Dr/ Brookview Dr roundabout | Install traffic calming at the Kerrykeel Drive / Brookview Drive roundabout to address frequent near misses and speeding concerns. | We understand your concerns about near misses at this location. As this falls outside the scope of the current project, we have passed these suggestions on to the relevant teams for further investigation by lodging a CRM case, CAS-1203640-C1M2N4. |
Broken Yellow Line Visibility | Repaint faded yellow lines to prevent illegal parking | The yellow lines will be repainted as part of the project to improve visibility and safety. |
Intersection Visibility | Extend yellow lines near 55 & 57 Kerrykeel Drive to improve turning visibility | Thank you for your detailed feedback. As this falls outside the scope of the current project, we have passed these suggestions on to the relevant teams for further investigation by lodging a CRM case, CRM CAS-1174313-X3T4R9. |
Restrict Truck parking | Restrict parking heavy vehicles in the residential streets | We understand large vehicles like trucks can sometimes cause issues when parked on residential streets. While there are no specific laws banning this, they must follow general road rules. It is illegal to park within one metre of a driveway or six metres of an intersection. Heavy vehicles parked on the road at night must also have a red light displayed at the rear, which is visible for 100 metres. We encourage you to report any issues via our website so the appropriate team can investigate and take any necessary action. |
The feedback and suggestions shows a community that’s engaged, solution-oriented, and eager to collaborate on making the neighbourhood safer and more functional for everyone.
About the project
Making roads safer for Ormiston Primary School community
Ormiston Primary School, along with residents, parents and the wider Flat Bush community, has raised concerns about pedestrian safety and high traffic speeds in the vicinity of the school. vicinity of the school
More than 1,000 tamariki attend nearby schools, and many walk, bike, or scoot through these busy streets.
In response, we are proposing road safety improvements at two key locations:
- The Kerrykeel Drive/Arranmore Drive roundabout
- Kerrykeel Drive (near Springside Drive)
These changes aim to make our roads safer and easier to navigate for everyone, especially for tamariki using Kerrykeel Drive.
This proposal is supported by the Howick Local Board and funded through the Local Board Transport Capital Fund.
Auckland Transport is delivering the project on behalf of the Howick Local Board.
We are now seeking your feedback on the proposed changes.
What we are proposing
We are proposing the following changes:
At the Kerrykeel Drive/Arranmore Drive roundabout:
Two road-level zebra crossings:
- One on the eastern side of the roundabout
- One on the western side of the roundabout
Arranmore Drive
A pedestrian refuge island crossing on Arranmore Drive.
Reprioritising parking for safety
Eleven on-street parking spaces near the crossings will be reprioritised as “no stopping at all times” zones and marked with broken yellow lines to improve visibility near pedestrian crossings.
On Kerrykeel Drive near Springside Drive:
- Upgrade the existing pedestrian refuge island crossing to a school patrolled road level zebra crossing.
- Installing high friction surfacing on the approaches to the zebra crossing to make it easier for drivers to stop more quickly and safely when approaching a pedestrian crossing
- New cycle ramps and widened footpath on the northern side of the crossing to assist with cyclist movements
