About the Project
We’re responding to safety concerns raised by the community about improving accessibility and safety when crossing the road outside Birdwood School on Karepo Crescent, Ranui.
Karepo Crescent is a quiet residential street that parents and their tamariki frequently use to reach the school and kindergarten. Replacing the school patrolled crossing with a new zebra crossing will significantly improve safety for the community, particularly for children crossing the road to attend the school.
The Changes we're making
Install a new zebra crossing at 16 Karepo Crescent and alter the existing traffic islands. The zebra crossing prioritises pedestrians and makes it safer for anyone crossing the road, as drivers must stop and wait for them. Altering the existing traffic islands helps make way for the new zebra crossing.
Installing new pram crossings with yellow tactile pavers at the crossing points outside Birdwood School on Karepo Crescent. Pram crossings make it safer and more convenient for people pushing prams or strollers and ensure those with mobility needs can navigate crossings more easily. Tactile pavers are yellow guidance markers that help vision-impaired people cross the road.
Paint no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) outside 16, 18 & 23 Karepo Crescent, to clear access and help with visibility of people crossing here.
Install new signs to support these changes.
Benefits to your community

Pram crossings make it safer and more convenient for people pushing prams or strollers to crossroads. It helps ensure those with mobility needs can navigate crossings more easily.
Encourages drivers to slow down and take extra care when approaching the crossing and improves visibility between motorists and people crossing the road.
