About the project

John Street – Proposed Speed-Calming Facilities

We are planning important safety improvements on John Street, Ponsonby. Our goal is to make it much safer and easier for people to walk along John Street, especially for children travelling to and from schools nearby.

This project is being delivered in response to community requests for a safer walking environment on John Street following the government’s speed limit reversal from 30 km/h to 50 km/h in John Street.

Currently, there is an approximately 800metre section of John Street between Jervois Road and Summer Street that lacks sufficient speedcalming measures, making it difficult for residents, particularly students to move safely across the road and along the street. The proposed speed humps and side islands will help create a safer walking environment on John Street, making it easier for families, residents, students and visitors to access local shops, schools and community facilities.

We are proposing to install two speed humps and two side islands. As a result, this will help reduce average vehicle speeds along the entire road. This improvement will make John Street a safer and more pedestrianfriendly area that better meets the needs of the local community.

What we’re planning to do before December 2026

To enhance safety for everyone on John Street, we propose to install two side islands outside 48 & 63 John Street and two speed humps outside 24 & 109 John Street.

  • Installing two side islands outside 48 John Street and 63 John Street.

  • Installing two speed humps outside 24 John Street and 109 John Street.

  • New road markings will be installed to align with the proposed speedcalming facilities.

  • A total of 2 parking will be removed.

You can see where these changes will be made below:

How this will benefit your neighbourhood

These upgrades will make John Street safer and more convenient for everyone—whether you’re walking or driving through the area.

  • Provides a clearer street environment for motorists to navigate, helping drivers naturally slow down and pay closer attention in busy areas.

  • Creates a safer walking environment and connections between local streets, businesses, and shops.

We want you feedback

If you have any concerns, suggestions or support for these improvements, let us know by emailing engagementfeedback@johnstaff.co.nz with “John Street” in the subject line before 30 March 2026.
