  • These changes will result in 2 on-street car park losses

The benefits to your community:

  • Create a safe walkways for everyone, including children, seniors, and people with mobility needs, along Jennifer Place.
  • Make it easier for people to walk and connect to the train station, bus stops and local retail shops.

Jennifer Place feedback

Feedback

Thanks for the upgrade along Jennifer place. Will be safe for pedestrians especially children. Also as a resident home owner on Shirley Road we always experience high speed vehicles traveling from old Papatoetoe town towards great south road. The sharp bend creates a blind spot and its always hard to come out from our driveway. Would appreciate if there can be a reflection mirror installed across the road so we can have a safe way out or suggest if council can put some humps to reduce the speed of the vehicles passing by. We have come across some near miss accidents when getting out it's very dangerous and high risk of getting hit by passing vehicles around the bend. We urge the council to come and inspect and we do trust council will workout a plan for this as well. Many thanks.

Response

Thank you for sharing your concerns. We understand your request however, we no longer install convex mirrors. While they can be helpful in some situations, we’ve found them generally ineffective and sometimes unsafe. They can distort distance and speed, leading to misjudgements that put road users at risk. Additionally, these mirrors are costly to install and maintain, with frequent issues like theft and vandalism. For these reasons, we cannot approve installing a convex mirror near your driveway on Shirley Road.
Regarding speed humps, Shirley Road is a secondary arterial route designed for high traffic volumes and efficient movement of vehicles, buses, and freight. Physical speed-calming measures would reduce capacity, cause delays, and increase maintenance costs due to wear from heavy traffic. Therefore, we generally avoid installing such treatments on arterial roads.

We also did a review of existing safety measures at this location. Currently, advance warning signs, chevron signs, raised reflective pavement makers, and other road markings are in place to highlight the bend. Based on available crash history, we do not believe additional interventions are needed at this stage. We will continue to monitor the location and review if circumstances change.
