About the project

In 2020 members of the community contacted AT about improving safety and speeds around Summerland Primary School, Bear Park and Summerland Kindergarten after a child was struck by a vehicle while crossing the road. The school joined the Safe School Speeds programme, and school and community representatives worked with AT to co-design and trial a new layout to improve safety around the school.

The key goals of the Safe School Speeds programme were to test temporary infrastructure improvements that support road safety around schools, reduced vehicle speeds and to encourage more active modes of transport to and from schools with the increased level of safety.

At Summerland Primary, we trialled measures along Summerland Drive, Harvest Drive and Brookwood Drive to help reduce vehicle speeds and improve pedestrian safety. Feedback was received during the trial and shaped the changes made over its course. After the trial, we found the measures successfully helped to reduce speeds and improve safety. Most of temporary infrastructure remained in place while we planned the permanent design and worked to secure funding for delivery.

The changes we're making

Here’s a breakdown of the permanent infrastructure we’ll be building over the temporary infrastructure:

Temporary change

Permanent replacement

Speed humps on Summerland Drive and Harvest Drive creating a school zone.

Two new raised pedestrian crossings will be installed near to the roundabout, one on Harvest Drive, and one on Summerland Drive outside Bear Park Daycare Centre.

Speed cushions with new traffic islands will be installed outside 57 Summerland Drive.

Speed humps on both approaches to the School Kea Crossing on Summerland Drive.A new pedestrian crossing on a raised table, with new signs and posts.
An extension to the central traffic island.

Kerb buildout, created with flexiposts, between the school crossing and the roundabout to narrow the road.

Permanent kerb build out to narrow the road, which helps reduce traffic speed.

Kerb buildouts, created with flexiposts to narrow the crossing points on the corner of Summerland Drive and Brookwood Drive.

Permanent kerb build out to narrow the crossing point.

Tactiles pavers to be installed and the footpath at the corner realigned to the direction people cross.

A new speed hump will be installed to slow traffic and No stopping lines installed around this corner.

You can download the drawings on the right-hand side of this webpage to see all the planned changes.

What happens next

We plan to install these changes in 2025. Any change to the plan will be updated on this page.

We will be in touch with local residents, school, daycare and kindergarten before we start construction.
